CIVIL ENGINEERING Civil Engineering students and professionals have the possibility of doing volunteer work in their field. Eighty percent of the work is carried out in rural communities. This volunteer work can deal with elaboration of studies or technical reports, construction, physical evaluation of the works, and completion of the works. The following are examples of specific works: Opening and restauration of local tracks Construction de bridges and footbridges Construction of school classrooms Construction of rural health clinics Systems of drinking water Sewer and drainage systems Latrines system Collection center for agricultural products Construction of communal locals And more... The execution of these works is coordinated and directed by the Unit of Studies and Works of the Department of Urban and Rural Development Management. II . FOREST ENGINEERING OR NATURAL RESOURCES ENGINEERING The Municipalities of the Satipo Province have a great biodiversity because it is a part of the Peruvian Amazon Region. However, the wild fauna and flora are unfortunately exterminated by the type of agriculture practiced by the majority of crop farmers (cutting down and burning), in order to install crops for commercializing in the market. As a result, in a few years the land becomes unproductive, which forces them to cut down other lands in order to continue their agricultural practice. We also have to take into account the irresponsible and unsustainable timber exploitation by private companies. The Municipalities are trying to develop different actions aimed at counteracting this tendency. The participation of forest or natural resources professionals is essential for developing studies, projects, awareness campaigns, programs or projects for the restitution of the natural resources. This volunteer work is conducted in coordination with the Unit of Environment and the Environment Commissions of the Municipalities. III. ANTHROPOLOGY The Province of Satipo is characterized by a culturally diversed population. There are many communities composed by indigenous inhabitants such as the Ashaninkas and the Nomachiguengas; and by inhabitants of other regions of Peru. Traditionally these population groups practiced a self-consumption economy due to the abundant of the natural resources of the forest and the rivers; however, these communities are entering poverty and their live conditions are deteriorating because the natural resources are gradually decreasing due to an irrational and unsustainable use by the other sectors of the population and the timber companies; and also because as they have more contact with other dominant cultures, they are gradually loosing their cultural values: solidarity, cooperation and mutual help. For these reasons, there is a big worry about finding the adequate ways for a beneficial integration of these population groups in the market dynamics. Anthropology students and professionals can carry out an important task by designing strategies, studies, plans and projects that will enhance the integral, harmonized and sustainable development of the community, together with different social and cultural organizations. This volunteer work is coordinated by the Unit of the Indigenous Affairs of the Municipalities. IV. HEALTH Students and professionals from different health fields can carry out tasks of preventive medicine, first aid and family planning. They also have the opportunity of becoming familiar with natural medicine practices based on indigenous plants by the native inhabitants of the Ashaninkas y Nomachiguengas communities. This work is coordinated by the Health and Hygiene Commission of the Municipalities, together with the participation and collaboration of the health sector through the General Hospital of Satipo and the different health centers located in the rural communities. - Applicant Requirements:
