In short: Center for International Voluntary Service is looking for qualified medical personnel who are willing to volunteer in the Early Identification, Assessment and Management Program of the Kenya Society for Mentally Handicapped. Introduction Kenya Society for the Mentally Handicapped is a charitable organization that was officially registered on 22nd June 1971. The Society's main objective was to respond to the problems and needs (in education, health, social and economic welfare) of persons with intellectual disabilities in Kenya. It has gone a long way in ensuring that all its programs and services correspond with this important mission. KSMH continues to recognize the important role played by its countrywide network of volunteers. Through the voluntary program, the Society has been able to implement many projects successfully. In respect to the above, we are looking for qualified volunteers willing to assist in implementing the program of Early Identification, Assessment and Management of Mental disabilities in Kenya. The programme involves a multidisciplinary team of specialists in the following major areas. 1. Educational Psychologist 2. Physiotherapist 3. Occupational therapist 4. Speech therapist 5. Nutritionist 6. Neurologist 7. Sociologist 8. Clinical psychologist 9. Psychiatrist 10. Medical imaging technician The above specialists will work together to come up with an individualized management programme for each identified person with intellectual disability. Volunteering at KSMH We are looking for volunteers qualified in one of the ten above mentioned areas. Each volunteer will be required to carry out his or her responsibilities with discretion bearing in mind the delicate nature of persons with intellectual disabilities. Generally all volunteers will be required to 1.Identify and assess persons with intellectual disabilities. 2.Develop an effective care or management plan for each client in reference to ones area of specialization. 3.Prepare specialists reports of each individual case based on ones area of specialization. 4.Monitor client needs and improvement throughout the project implementation process. 5.Perform any and/or all responsibilities pertaining to ones area of specialization to support persons with intellectual disabilities. 6.Engage in a multidisciplinary team to develop the best programme to manage mental disabilities according to PWIDs' individual needs. 7.Work closely with the organization's secretariat to ensure a high standard of service delivery to persons with intellectual disabilities in Kenya is maintained at all times. more details can be found on our website: www.civskenya.org - Applicant Requirements:
Interested volunteers should 1. Have relevant qualification and experience in any of the ten outlined areas of specialization. 2. Be able to handle and care for persons with intellectual disabilities. 3. Have good organizational, report writing and analytical skills. 4. Be willing to work in a team and participate fully in developing individualized care and management plans for persons with intellectual disabilities. 5. Be willing to work on voluntary basis. (Students in the above areas of specialization will be given an opportunity to apply for attachments/internships at the organization.
