- Pestbuster team wins Forest & Bird trophy for trapping 530 bird killers
-
Conservation organisation Forest & Bird has awarded its annual Pestbuster prize to Don Sullivan and his team of trappers in Nelson. The team's tally for the year was 234 possums, 204 rats, 69 mice, 14 hedgehogs, six stoats and three weasels using 325 traps. Don has also spent time and money building 750 traps, some of which he has given to other pest control groups. Don, an orchard worker, has been a Forest & Bird member for 40 years, and he realised the need for pest control when he noticed a decline in birdlife while tramping. "We are trying to get the birdlife back so the children can see them," he says. (Marina Skinner, Forest & Bird, June 2009)

- Gambling with Gaia: Geoengineering and iron fertilization
-
Weather modification and environmental manipulation in attempts to control climate change. "The US government is lobbying for "geoengineering" activities such as deliberately polluting the stratosphere to deflect sunlight and lower temperatures. At least 9 national governments and the European Union have supported experiments to spread iron filings on the ocean surface to nurture plankton and sequester carbon dioxide. At least a dozen additional countries are involved in stratospheric weather/climate modification. Commercial carbon traders are engaging in ocean fertilization as well. The scientific debate and the government and commercial experimentation is taking place, once again, in the absence of public discussion." (ETC, 2007)

- Greenpeace's updated Clean Energy Guide
-
Greenpeace has released an updated version of it's Clean Energy Guide, which ranks New Zealand's electricity companies on their contribution to climate change, both now and in the future. The updated guide encourages New Zealand consumers to switch to a cleaner electricity supplier. Switching to a cleaner electricity supplier is easy. You can make the switch simply by ringing your current power company and telling them you want to change, or online at http://www.cleanenergyguide.org.nz. The guide ranks each company that feeds into the national grid according to its current supply and future commitment to clean, renewable energy. This edition also takes into account each company's energy efficiency programmes and whether they encourage households to generate their own renewable electricity. Our last guide helped many New Zealanders switch to cleaner electricity, and helped stop Mighty River Power's Marsden B coal-fired power station.
