Millennium Development Goals and Vietnam's Socio-Economic

Viet Nam has made rapid progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Yet difficult challenges remain. The development of the Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2006-2010 presents a strategic opportunity to tackle the most pressing of these challenges and propel Viet Nam towards the national objectives of peace, prosperity and equality. This report has proposed a set of concrete social indicators based on the MDGs and adapted to the specific conditions of Viet Nam. As an internationally recognized set of goals with clear targets and indicators, the MDGs represent a global benchmark against which all countries can measure their development progress. The MDGs also help countries and donors to focus their efforts on improving conditions for the poorest people, specifically those who do not have enough to eat or lack access to basic health and education services. (United Nations Vietnam, December 2005)

Stumping for Development

A recent United Nations initiative is aiming to plant the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) firmly on the platforms of the campaign for Nicaragua's Nov. 5 elections. The idea is to encourage candidates to build commitment towards a better future for the country, one of Latin America' poorest. (José Adán Silva, IPS, 14 August 2006)

"A Future Within Reach" Asia Pacific Second Regional MDG Report

September 2005. The report entitled "A future within reach: reshaping institutions in a region of disparities to meet the Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Pacific " is the second in a series of regional reports on the MDGs in the region. It was commissioned through a tripartite initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). As an advocacy document, it is intended to provide government policy makers and other development stakeholders with the most comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the region's progress towards the MDGs. It also offers a range of policy options for improving the region's prospects for meeting the goals, particularly those related to providing basic services on health, education, water and sanitation and to enhancing regional cooperation.

Achieving the MDGs in Asia: a case for more aid? [PDF 377.51]

This paper attempts to broaden the perspective on the performance of countries in meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by highlighting the work that remains to be done in Asia. First, it shows that, despite the progress that many countries in the region are making towards reaching the MDGs, by far the largest number of people affected by the various social and economic dimensions of poverty live in Asia. Second, it demonstrates that given this large number, Asia is benefiting from relative small amounts of development aid. This report was prepared by UNESCAP as background for the Asia 2015 Conference - Promoting Growth, Ending Poverty, London, 6-7 March 2006, with funding support from the Asian Development Bank. Draft, UNESCAP, March 2006.

Does Debt Relief Increase Fiscal Space in Zambia?

This Country Study examines fiscal policy in Zambia, and how expenditure and taxation could be used to accelerate growth and reduce poverty. Since 1990, fiscal policy has been closely linked to debt servicing and constrained by external loan conditionalities. This inversion of social priorities has had a debilitating effect on growth, poverty reduction and combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It finds that due to associated policy conditionalities and other factors, HIPC debt relief will result in less fiscal space, rather than more. The Zambian government has little leeway to choose its own fiscal policies, despite donor rhetoric about 'national ownership' of poverty-reduction policies. (UNDP, September 2006)

LATIN AMERICA: Poverty Reduction Still Major - but Not Impossible - Challenge

Latin America and the Caribbean have made significant headway towards most Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Poverty reduction, however, still looms as a major -- yet surmountable -- challenge for some countries. Brazil's publicity campaign "Eight Ways to Change the World" was named one of the top five MDG initiatives, in praising its creativity in mobilising and inspiring commitment in a variety of social sectors. The MDGs were a main theme in Rio de Janeiro's famed carnival. (Mario Osava, IPS, 4 August 2006)

Millennium Development Goals: China's Progress (pdf

United Nations Country Team in China, 2004. China's Progress Towards the Millennium Development Goals, compiled by the UN Country Team in China, looks back at China's achievements and experiences since 2000 in its progress towards the MDGs, identifies the problems and shortfalls and puts forward suggestions for the way forward. The statistical methods and means of assessment used may not be quite the same and the analytical perspectives adopted may also vary, but the report undoubtedly gives all sides useful insights into the current situation of China's development, the challenges it faces and its future path.

Millennium Development Goals: Progress in Asia and the Pacific 2006

This report is the latest update on the progress towards MDGs in Asia and the Pacific. By zooming in on specific indicators, the report highlights the region's achievements and exposes issues on which much work remains to be done. Asia-Pacific countries continue to make progress towards the MDGs, but on present trends many are likely to miss some vital targets, including those for infant mortality, HIV prevalence and access to water and sanitation in urban areas. Even more worryingly, some countries are at risk of failing to reach even two-thirds of the targets. (ESCAP, UNDP and ADB, 2006)

The Millennium Development Goals in Africa: Progress and Challenges

The MDGs are measurable targets attached to a timeframe for making a difference in the lives of billions of people. Governments in developing and developed countries have jointly committed themselves to provide the resources and the policies to implement these Goals. This report looks at at African efforts to achieve the Goals. While the overall message is that Africa is falling behind and needs urgently to find new and effective strategies to move forward, there are important successes to report and they must be celebrated and shared as best practices for others to emulate. The 43 page report documents the Economic Comission for Africa's findings on each goal and draws on other relevant research to offer practical policy advice on how Africans in government, business, civil society and other sectors can work together to accelerate progress. United Nations in Cuba

In 2000, Cuba subscribed to the Millennium Declaration. In spite of being a developing country, it shows relatively high social indicators and a strong degree of homogeneity across the country. Six of the eight Goals classify as probable, according to the general classification that is being used by UNDP, of which three have already been fulfilled. The remaining two goals can be met in the timeframe set based on the current actions and those anticipated for the future. Within the framework of the activities to celebrate the 60 Anniversary of the United Nations, the UN agencies had the honor to inaugurate the exhibition: The Millennium Development Goals in Cuba that presents the progress made in the country and the global trends. This Internet link enables you to access the electronic version of the panels of this Exhibition.

Why Nigeria may not attain MDGs in 2015

Nigerian civil society leader Dr. Sarah Ochekpe calls on government to change its strategy to reach the Millennium Development Goals. Dr. Ochekpe, the policy advisor of the Civil Society Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) and leader of the GCAP Nigeria Coalition, claims that Nigeria runs the risk of failing to attain the MDGs if the next seven and a half years are like the first. "At half time, the score board for Nigeria does not show clear victory by 2015." However, she remains optimistic that Nigeria can not only achieve the MDGs but surpass them with appropriate political will and financial support. (Modestus Chukwulaka, The Sun News On-Line, 23 July 2007).
