Monitoring Impact of Fair Trade Systems: A Case Study of Kuapa Kokoo and the Day Chocolate Company [pdf]

Recent years have seen a prominent interest in independently assessing the impact of Fairtrade initiatives on producer groups in developing countries to provide a 'snapshot' of impact. Apart from these, however, it is also important, to assess impacts as part of an internal ongoing process. This is so that the organisation itself can learn, on a continuous basis, about its own progress towards its stated objectives. The challenge in sustainable monitoring and evaluation (M&E) is to design a monitoring system that allows an organisation to track its own progress towards its own objectives, without imposing an onerous burden on the organisation. This document uses the case study of developing M&E for the Ghanan cocoa growing group Kuapa Kokoo and the British fair trade company Day Chocolate to highlight the challenges and approaches particular to monitoring impact for Fairtrade initiatives. Outcome Mapping

The International Development Research Centre is working with Dr. Barry Kibel to adapt his Outcome Engineering approach to the development research context. A methodology called "Outcome Mapping" was developed, which characterizes and assesses the contributions development programs make to the achievement of outcomes. Outcome Mapping can be used at the program, project, or organizational level. The originality of the methodology is its shift away from assessing the development impact of a programme (defined as changes in state - for example: poverty alleviation, or reduced conflict) and toward changes in the behaviours, relationships, actions or activities of the people, groups, and organisations with whom a development programme works directly. This shift alters the way a programme understands its goals and assesses its performance and results. This page has many resources on Outcome Mapping.

Public Sector Reform: What Works and Why?

'About one-sixth of World Bank projects in recent years have supported public sector reform, because the quality of the public sector- accountability, effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery, transparency and so forth - is thought by many to contribute to development.' This Independent Evaluation Group report explores World Bank support for such reforms in an effort to determine what is working and what is not working.

The Happy Planet Index: An Index of Human Well-Being and Environmental Impact

The Happy Planet Index (HPI) seeks to measure the ecological efficiency with which human well-being is delivered. It compares countries based on three different indicators: life expectancy; ecological footprint; and people's subjective well-being or "life satisfaction". In putting forward the HPI as an alternative measure of success, this report argues for greater attention to environmental and quality of life consequences of government policies. The Money Exchange Dealers of Kabul: A Study of the Hawala System in Afghanistan

World Bank Report August 2003 (PDF 3.29MB) Money exchange dealers, or hawalas, have long provided their customers with a reliable, inexpensive means of transferring funds into Afghanistan and among its provinces. They offer a diverse range of financial and non-financial business services at the local, regional, and international level. More recently, they have been instrumental in providing financial services for the delivery of emergency relief and humanitarian and developmental aid into Afghanistan for the majority of international and domestic NGOs, donor organizations, and development aid agencies. This study was undertaken to examine this system in detail.

UNHCR guidelines on formal determination of the best interests of the child

These guidelines recommend some principles that can be used to construct a framework for ensuring compliance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child in a formal best interests determination (BID). They are aimed at people working at the field level for the UNHCR or their operational partners partners. They may also be useful to states extending their domestic child protection mechanisms to displaced or stateless people. (UNHCR, May 2008)
