Bulletin from Bali: What Are We Going to Do About the United States?

by Eric Mann July 15, 2002. Author's Introduction: This year, in late August 2002, the United Nations will hold the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), an international conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, ostensibly to create a new model of sustainable development that integrates economic development, social justice, and environmental imperatives. WSSD is supposed to be a ten year follow-up and implementation conference to the 1992 Rio de Janeiro UN Conference on Environment and Development--thus, its other name, "Rio plus 10." In the Preparatory Committee (PrepComm) meetings that have preceded WSSD, (the latest in Bali, Indonesia held in late May through early June) a common theme has emerged--the United States government is bound and determined to undermine, overthrow, and sabotage any international treaties, agreements, and conferences that it believes restrict its sovereignty in any way as the world's rogue superpower. More Society in Markets: Environmental Regulation

Most Latin American countries have pursued a market oriented development strategy. Insertion into the global economy has entailed massive foreign investment in the different productive sectors, often in remote and rural areas. The local effects of production are often significant. Environmental regulation is in general at an early stage and enforcement is weak. 2002

Reconciling Agriculture and Biodiversity: Policy and Research Challenges of Ecoagriculture

Conventional wisdom holds that modern farming is largely incompatible with wildlife conservation. Thus policies to protect wildlife typically rely on land use segregation, establishing protected areas from which agriculture is officially excluded. Farmers are seen as problems by those promoting this view of wildlife conservation. This paper argues, however, that enhancing the contribution of farming systems is an essential part of any biodiversity conservation strategy, and requires new technical research, support for local farmer innovation, and adoption of new agricultural and environmental policies at local , national and international levels.

Contribution from UNEP DTIE to the World Summit on Sustainable Development

The Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is contributing to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) with three supporting initiatives: a series of sectoral reports , whereby international sectoral industry organisations take stock of progress towards sustainable development and outline future challenges; regional consultation processes, through which multi-stakeholder fora put forward key industry and sustainability issues for the consideration of decision-makers; an assessment report by UNEP on industry's progress of the implementation of Agenda 21, which will document global developments at both the aggregate and sectoral levels. In addition, UNEP has joined forces with the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Resources Institute (WRI) to produce a joint report on key trends that are shaping the world markets.
