Contribution from UNEP DTIE to the WSSD

The Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (DTIE) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is contributing to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) with a number of mutually supportive initiatives. DTIE has facilitated the preparation of a series of sectoral reports, whereby industry organisations take stock of progress towards sustainable development, and outline future challenges and actions to be taken. In addition, DTIE is organising a side event on "Energy for Sustainable Development" jointly with IEA and Eskom. Finally, DTIE is leading a number of partnership initiatives to be launched on the occasion of the Summit. These are action-oriented initiatives that need only be agreed by those directly involved (so-called "Type 2" partnerships). They are expected to become one of the main outcomes of the Summit.

Earth Summit Watch

Holding Governments Accountable For Their Commitments To Sustainable Development In 1992, the leaders of the world's nations met at the Earth Summit in Rio to set out an ambitious agenda to address the environmental, economic, and social challenges facing the international community. Earth Summit Watch is a unique citizens' initiative to monitor and encourage actions by each national government to implement the promises made in Rio and thereafter to move toward sustainable development. It is clear while some progress has been made, much remains to be done.

Rio10

The Project’s main aim is to boost the participation, in terms of quality as well as quantity, of the South’s civil society in the preparation for, participation in and follow-up of the Johannesburg Summit in 2002. It particularly focuses on furthering an inclusive public debate in each country in order to substantiate the negotiating positions of the governments concerned. The project involves NGOs and social organisations in 30 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The purpose of the website is for these NGOs to be able to share information; to communicate with each other; to make their documents and political proposals for the Johannesburg Summit available to others; to debate issues concerning the Johannesburg Summit. The website will also be a forum for sharing ideas on how to lobby governments, develop strategies for information campaigns in the different countries, and in other ways prepare well for the Johannesburg Summit.

The Jo'burg Memo

- FAIRNESS IN A FRAGILE WORLD - A Memorandum for the World Summit on Sustainable Development What will be the legacy of the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development? Will it be remembered as an "historic" watershed, as we now regard the 1992 Rio Earth Summit? Will Johannesburg generate results that will be worthy of celebration, or will it lead to yet another meaningless global photo opportunity? We publish this Memorandum a few months before the Summit, at a critical juncture of renewed political momentum. It is our contribution to the debate on both the desired outcomes of the Summit and the critical path for the sustainable development agenda in the next decade.
