- Careers Advice from George Monbiot: Choose Life
-
Every week, sometimes every day, someone writes to me asking for advice about the career they should take. I can't, unfortunately, respond to them all, so I thought I should try to formulate some general guidelines, which I hope people will be able to adapt to their own circumstances. This advice applies only to those who have a genuine choice of careers, which means, regrettably, that it does not apply to the majority of the world's workforce. But if the people writing to me did not have choice, they wouldn't be asking.

- How to get Ahead, by C. W. Mills
-
Based on years of research and astute observation, the legendary sociologist C. W. Mills, author of "The Sociological Imagination" and "The Power Elite", explains the personal characteristics of the top people, and how they made it to their pre-eminent positions. (Keep in mind Mills was not a great admirer of the rich and powerful - he once said "We study history, it has been said, to rid ourselves of it, and the history of the power elite is a clear case for which this maxim is correct.")

- International Fund for Research and Development & Maxwell Strategy: Online Job Scams
-
An organisation called 'International Fund for Research and Development (IFFRD) & Maxwell Strategy' is currently posting job advertisements on various development job websites. According to the Better Business Bureau this is an employment scam. It appears that 'successful candidates' for the 'jobs' offered by this group are requested to send money to defray training costs; after the money is sent no job eventuates. We strongly recommend that you avoid the International Fund for Research and Development (IFFRD). (For more information see the link below to the Better Business Bureau, 10 May 2007)

- Why Not Practice What We Preach?
-
This article argue that unpaid internships go against all of the values that international development NGOs preach. In addition, because those without a private income cannot afford to live without a wage, the internship system is biased towards the upper middle classes, helping to exclude many other sections of society from working in the field of development and human rights.
