Intergration of Indigenous Peoples' Perspective in Country Development Processes: review of selected CCAs and UNDAFs

As part of the UN reform put in place by the Secretary-General in 1997, the Common Country Assessment (CCA) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) were adopted as strategic planning tools for the UN system. The objective of this review is to assess the content and approach of the 2004-2005 CCA/UNDAF with reference to indigenous issues, trends, challenges and opportunities (Prasenjit Chakma, Secretariat of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, 10 May 2007).

Learning From the Poor

While the poor stand out in their poverty and deprivation, they are not able to stand up against the maladies of the systems from which they draw their sustenance. The power equations at their level are simply not empowering. They need to break many a vicious circle to get into the virtuous circle of development. DB along with the Government of India supported two phases of participatory poverty assessments in seven Indian states. The studies were supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) and spread across 78 districts and 842 locations covering over twenty thousand poor people. Completed in 2005, the studies brought forth a multitude of perspectives on the issue of poverty. The synthesis report, Learning from the Poor, cuts across the studies to highlight common threads that emerge (Asian development bank, 10 July 2007) .

Remittances during crises: implications for humanitarian response

This paper is the final product of a two-year study into the role that remittances play in crises. The work explores how affected people use remittance income to survive and recover from crises, the effect that crises can have on remittance flows and the way that humanitarian responses consider the role of remittances (Savage and Harvey, ODI, May 2007).

TIERRAS: PROMOTING PEACEFUL SOLUTIONS TO LAND CONFLICTS IN ALTA VERAPAZ

This document is meant to act as part case study and part technical resource. Therefore, its structure and sub-sections are intended to give descriptions and analysis of the TIERRAS project, while also providing practical resources to use as starting points for assessments and integrated land conflict project design including: lessons learned, challenges, stakeholder testimonies and additional resources. It is recommended to read the document in its entirety once to capture how the project components link and complement each other, and then return to delve into specific sections of interest. World Development Report 2007

The theme of the World Development Report (WDR) 2007 is youth, aged 12 to 24. It focuses on decisions concerning the five phases with the biggest long-term impact on how human capital is kept safe, developed, and deployed. For each phase (continuing to learn, starting to work, developing a healthful lifestyle, beginning a family, and exercising citizenship) governments must increase investments directly and cultivate an environment for young people and their families to invest in themselves (World Bank, World Developmment Report 2007).
