Development Studies at International and Area Studies, UC Berkeley

Development Studies is the study of social transformation or change. The problems of social transformation are urgent, massive, complex, and often they transcend the boundaries of conventional academic disciplines. Development Studies examines the problems, processes, and prospects for the development of human and material resources in what is generally thought to be the less developed areas of the world. To study comparative development effectively, one must draw upon many disciplines and construct a balanced understanding of historical and contemporary processes. Thus, studying development as a social transformation requires a blending of knowledge and perspectives from political science, economics, sociology, psychology, anthropology, geography, history, and resource and environmental science.

M.A. Program in Climate and Society at Columbia University

Columbia University has launched a new twelve-month masters degree, the M.A. Program in Climate and Society, which will train professionals and academics to understand and cope with the impacts of climate variability and climate change on society and the environment. The program's director, Mark Cane, who is the G. Unger Vetlesen Professor of Earth and Climate Sciences, led the team that made the first scientific prediction of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon in the 1980s. How people can benefit from climate prediction information has been a major topic of Cane's research since that time. Columbia is at the forefront of research on climate and climate applications, and is supported by an extensive network of research units and faculty. Drawing on the superb educational and research facilities of Columbia University, the M.A. Program in Climate and Society combines elements of established programs in Earth Sciences, Earth Engineering, International Relations, Politics, Sociology, and Economics, with unique classes in inter-disciplinary applications specially designed for the program's students. A set of core courses will stress inter-disciplinary problem solving. These include: Dynamics of climate variability and change; Regional climate and climate impacts; Quantitative models of climate-sensitive natural and human systems; Policy-making under uncertainty. A professional development seminar and a choice between a summer internship or research thesis complete the required core. At the end of twelve intensive months of study, graduates will be prepared to address environmental issues from positions in government, business, and nongovernmental organizations. Some may wish to continue their academic careers in the social or natural sciences.

Michigan State University's Women & International Development Program

Michigan State University's Women & International Development Program (WID) promotes teaching, research, and action on international development and global transformation as they affect women and gender relations. While WID's primary focus is the Southern Hemisphere, the program recognizes that the "South" is a set of relationships rather than a place. Moreover, development and global change bring costs as well as benefits, which are often not shared equally by men and women of different nations, races, classes, and ethnicities.
