Centre for Development Studies, University of Auckland  pop

The Graduate Programme in Development Studies at The University of Auckland provides a supportive environment for both theoretical and applied approaches, and for open, critical debate of leading development issues both in New Zealand and abroad. It offers students the opportunity to design an individual, cross-disciplinary programme of study of selected topics in development. It builds on the strengths of a range of participating disciplines and programmes which offer relevant courses and which provide much of the supervision for theses and dissertations. It prepares students for employment in local, national, and international organisations involved in development, as well as for academic careers. Above all, it seeks to engage students intellectually and personally in the critical issues of social change which are transforming global society.

Institute of Development Studies, Massey University  pop

The main focus is at the postgraduate level. Here qualifications offered are a one-year Diploma (DipDevStud), a two-year Masters degree (MPhil) and a doctorate (PhD). The Diploma and Masterate may be studied on a full- or part-time basis by internal or extramural study modes. The Programme offers a small number of courses at the undergraduate level but there is a large offering of relevant papers from many associated programmes. Development Studies is concerned with the interdisciplinary examination of processes which are transforming people's lives throughout the world. In the past, it was concerned only with the poorer countries of the world and with the ways largely Western solutions, could be applied to solve development problems. More recently, it has recognized that the large economic and social forces at work are universal, embracing and connecting us all, though our different cultures, environments and resources lead to differing contexts and outcomes. Similarly, there has been a realization that the solutions suggested not only need to recognize cultural, social and environmental differences but also that Western science and technology has to work with, and learn from, indigenous knowledge systems. Development Studies, therefore, is an approach which seeks to understand differences, examine key development issues and ideas, and develop skills to help solve development problems.

Otago University: Poverty, Inequality and Development Research Cluster

The Poverty, Inequality and Development research cluster is an interdisciplinary group concentrating upon the causes, consequences and challenges of development. It is well-established that widespread poverty stunts the capacity of societies to grow materially, culturally and to develop the institutional capacity to sustain democracy. This Research Cluster aims to research areas that are less well-known such as: how does inequality relate to poverty and affect efforts to alleviate it and promote development - including the resolution of political conflict?; what role can redistribution play in the social, economic and political development of society?; and how does the distribution of wealth between nations affect poverty relief and development prospects within nations? The cluster welcomes prospective graduate students to embark on programmes related to any of the core themes of poverty, inequality or development.

Post Graduate programme in Social Enterprise Studies

Waikato University's Post Graduate Diploma in Not-for-Profit Management has morphed into a new Post Graduate programme in Social Enterprise Studies. The opportunity to retain a focus on Not-for-Profit organisation and management has been retained within this new programme. The changing boundaries of responsibilities between the community, public and market sectors link this field of scholarship to the Waikato Management School's leadership in the focus on 'sustainability in a connected world'. The papers offer opportunities to develop a critical awareness of the scope of social enterprise organizations in a modern western society.
