This course is designed to equip students with an appreciation of issues in social, economic and political development from a multidisciplinary perspective. It allows them to acquire an understanding of the ways in which national governments and non-government organisations have instituted programs of social and economic change for peoples in developing areas such as Africa, Latin America and Asia. Units focus on a range of issues such as dependency and development aid in Latin America and Africa, the emergence of newly industrialising countries (particularly in Asia), gender and development, sustainable development, indigenous people and development, social movements and human rights.
