- Applied Conflict Transformation Studies

ACTS is a world-wide programme offering a part time Masters course in Conflict Transformation. The ACTS course combines theory, practice and action-research, and will both complement and challenge existing academic graduate courses on governance, rights, conflict and peace. Each 2 year course includes practical study, advanced conflict intervention skills, analysis and strategy development, plus specialised action research into areas of peacebuilding and conflict transformation which relate to participants work. In each region, the course addresses specific regional issues.

Education and research of the Development Economics Group is directed at the pivotal role of agricultural and rural development in low-income countries. Research focuses in particular on rural households and their responses to policy incentives in situations characterized by low and uncertain incomes, and incomplete markets. The Development Studies Institute (DESTIN) was established in 1990 to promote interdisciplinary post-graduate teaching and research on processes of social, political and economic development and change. The Institute is dedicated to understanding problems of poverty and late development within local communities, national political and economic systems and in the international system. Five clusters of interdisciplinary research expertise have emerged within the Institute: Institutional Change, Institutional Reform and Governance; War Torn Societies, Human Rights and Complex Emergencies; Globalisation, International Financial Markets, Trade and Aid; Local Level Urban and Rural Livelihood Strategies; Rural Development, Agrarian Reform and Agrarian Change.
