The Rise of the East: what does it mean for Development Studies?

The paper starts by highlighting the rise of the East, focusing in particular on the growth and transformation of China. It then distinguishes between four broad strands of Development Studies and shows how each strand is affected by the rise of the East. It concludes by discussing the need for a new vocabulary to make sense of the new world and - closely related to this - the need to break through a psychological barrier: analysing how the former 'periphery' is driving change in the 'centre'.

The Sustainable City 2008 (24 - 26 September, Skiathos, Greece)

The Conference aims to address the many inter-related aspects of the urban environment from transport and mobility to social exclusion and crime prevention. It is hoped that the meeting will build on the contributions made in previous conferences, which successfully managed to provide an international view of the problems facing modern cities and their solutions.

U8 Global Student Partnership for development

The U8 is a student-led global university network. It provides a neutral platform for students to learn, share ideas and make a positive impact on the least developed parts of the world. We believe that students, engendered with a methodology for enquiry and informed action, are well-placed to make a difference in the world.
