China: Quake death toll at 15,000  new

Chinese authorities increased the number of earthquake-related deaths to nearly 15,000 people Wednesday with over 100,000 still unaccounted for near the epicenter. Authorities have sent in tens of thousands of troops as heavy rains, mudslides and damaged buildings continue to challenge the rescue efforts.

Indonesia's New Mourning

For the past month the citizens of Yogyakarta have warily watched Mount Merapi, an active volcano 25 km from the ancient Indonesian city. So far Merapi hasn't blown. Instead, Yogyakartans discovered on Saturday that the real danger was the ground beneath their feet. At 5:54 a.m. the city of 3.2 million was rocked by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that struck offshore, just 24 km to the southwest. The fatal waves never came, but the temblor wreaked havoc on Yogyakarta and surrounding communities, killing at least 3,000 and leaving tens of thousands more injured and homeless. A grim benefit of the weeks of worry over Merapi was that emergency personnel and supplies were already in place. And the tsunami had given many of them gruesomely practical experience in rapid relief operations. (Bryan Walsh, Time Asia Magazine, 5 June 2006)

IRAN: Special report on Bam - one year after the devastating earthquake

BAM, 4 Jan 2005 (IRIN) - A year after an earthquake that killed at least 30,000 people in just seconds, and on the surface not much has changed. The mangled remains of a lost city are strewn across this once-fertile desert oasis. Debris, rubble and twisted metal girders are still piled high on every street and down every alley, almost untouched since the earthquake struck on 26 December 2003. Around them are date trees and a few half collapsed buildings stubbornly standing, precariously lopsided.

Pakistan: Political Impact of the Earthquake

This report from the International Crisis Group takes a critical look at the Pakistan governements performance following the devastating earthquake that struck in October 2005. This report "finds that the military government sought to use earthquake rescue and relief, and now intends to use reconstruction and rehabilitation, to demonstrate its competence. Its attempt, however, to maintain central control and refuse civilian oversight and other transparency measures while encouraging a prominent role for Islamist organisations, including jihadi groups banned as terrorists, threatens to waste much of the international effort while increasing the influence of political extremists."

PAKISTAN: Quake victims despair as wait for land drags on

Last year's 8 October quake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale killed at least 75,000 people and left more than 3.5 million homeless when it ripped through Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Pakistani-administered Kashmir. Now, 10 months later, many survivors are still living in camps and have no idea when they will be allocated land by the government. (IRIN, 16 August 2006)

Quake devastates Java

As relief started arriving this week to towns demolished by the 6.3-magnitude quake/ Compounding fears for the estimated 200,000 people left without shelter in heavy rains that have drenched the stricken landscape, a volcano 25km north of the most devastated communities belched lava more than 3km down its slopes on Monday.
