Media and Natural Disasters

Global Issues, by Anup Shah, October 23, 2005. The second half of 2005 alone seems to have witnessed a number of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, ferocious hurricanes, mudslides, floods, droughts, forest fires, failing crops, and more. Yet, we have had intense media coverage of some of these, but weaker or almost no reporting of others. Why is that? While there are legitimate and practical constraints at times, when news outlets broadcast or print their "world news" segments, it seems the global stories selected are often based on local drivers rather than a drive for truly global coverage.

A Tearfund briefing for the World Conference on Disaster Reduction 18-22nd January 2005, Kobe, Japan. Protecting persons affected by natural disaster: IASC operational guidelines on human rights and natural disasters

The UN inter-agency standing committee (IASC) argue that If humanitarian assistance is not based on a human rights framework, it risks having too narrow a focus, and cannot integrate all the basic needs of the victims into a holistic planning process. These guidelines, aimed at intergovernmental and non governmental humanitarian actors, provide tools for the implementation of rights based approaches in situations of natural disasters.(Brookings Institution,2006)

Radix - Radical Interpretations of Disaster

RADIX is meant as a home for discussion, working papers, opinion pieces, resources, links that can help to develop radical interpretations of and radical solutions (see resources for low cost rural rebuilding) for ALL disasters in ALL parts of planet earth. By radical we mean fundamental or concerning root causes (hence the Latin, radix). This web home is non-sectarian. We welcome any material that proposes to deal with fundamental issues such as human rights, respect for diversity, translation of available knowledge into action, the links among disasters, economic development, and politics. We are non-sectarian, but by no means apolitical. One of the fundamental aims of this web site is to put together into the same (cyber)space, groups that have not shared enough with each other in the past: scientists, human rights activists, development workers, government officials, business executives, environmentalists, media, popular culture workers.
