- The IMF: the Wrong Business Model - or the Wrong Business?
-
This Jubilee research paper argues that the IMF is facing growing financial problems given the trend of creditor countries to repay their debts and therefore reduce the amount of income the IMF receives. While some have asked whether the IMF now needs a new business model, this paper states that the real question is whether the Fund is, in fact, the wrong institution, doing the wrong job in the wrong way. Jubilee questions whether the IMF through its failure to adapt adequately or appropriately to the radical changes in the nature of the global economy since, outlived its usefulness in its present form?

- The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Poverty Reduction: A Survey of Literature and a Temporary Finding from Indonesia [pdf]
-
This study focuses on the experience of Indonesia with Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and all the economic reforms that have been undertaken to attract such investment. The paper analyses the long-term growth trends of FDI, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and poverty in Indonesia. The paper seeks to shed light on appropriate policies to pursue higher volumes of FDI and to maximise the impact on poverty reduction. It reviews the literature on the impact of FDI on poverty reduction in developing countries, and then explores the possible negative outcomes of the presence of FDI in developing countries. The paper goes on to conduct an analysis of trends in economic growth, income distribution and poverty in Indonesia since 1970. (Tambulan, T., Global Development Network, 2004)

- The Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD)
-
The Initiative for Policy Dialogue (IPD) is a global network of economists and social scientists based at Columbia University. IPD was established in July 2000 to help developing and transition countries explore economic policy alternatives. Debates on development strategies are often confined to a narrow range of options. IPD brings substance to the policy debate by providing analysis of alternatives, while leaving the selection of policy to the political process.

- The Masters of the Universe
-
By Pepe Escobar, The Asia Times, May 22, 2003. It may be instructive to learn what US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and the "Prince of Darkness" Richard Perle were doing last weekend. From May 15 to 18 they were guests at the Trianon Palace Hotel, close to the spectacular Versailles palace near Paris, for the annual meeting of the Bilderberg club. Depending on the ideological prism applied, the Bilderberg club may be considered an ultra-VIP international lobby of the power elite of Europe and America, capable of steering international policy from behind closed doors; a harmless "discussion group" of politicians, academics and business tycoons; or a capitalist secret society operating entirely through self interest and plotting world domination.
