Korea Animal Protection Society (KAPS)/International Aid for Korean Animals (IAKA)

KAPS and IAKA are dedicated to promoting animal welfare and protection in Korea through education, stricter animal cruelty laws and the continued development of the KAPS shelter... In spite of a 1991 law which prohibits the human consumption of dogs and cats, a flourishing industry exists within the markets in Korea. Illegal and unsanitary dog farms are hidden away in the countryside where breeders raise their stock for the butchers.

ARKive

ARKive is the Noah's Ark for the Internet era - a unique global initiative, gathering together into one centralised digital library, films, photographs and audio recordings of the world's species. ARKive is leading the 'virtual' conservation effort - finding, sorting, cataloguing and copying the key audio-visual records of the world's animals, plants and fungi, and building them into comprehensive and enduring multi-media digital profiles. Using film, photographs and audio recordings, ARKive is creating a unique record of the world's biodiversity - complementing other species information datasets, and making a key resource available for scientists, conservationists, educators and the general public.

FactoryFarming.com

Factory farming is an attitude which regards animals and the natural world merely as commodities to be exploited for profit. In animal agriculture, this attitude has lead to institutionalized animal cruelty, massive environmental destruction and resource depletion, and animal and human health risks.

Gone in an Instant: how the trade in illegally grown coffee is driving the destruction of Rhino, Tiger and Elephant Habitat

Using satellite imaging, interviews with coffee farmers and traders, and monitoring of coffee trade routes, WWF has tracked the illegal cultivation of robusta coffee inside Indonesia's remote Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park all the way through its export routes to multinational coffee companies and the shelves of grocery stores across the US, Europe and Asia. The park is one of the most important forest areas for tiger conservation in Southeast Asia. (WWF, January 2007)

India's forgotten tribes gain rights over forests

Over 40 million of India's most impoverished and marginalised people live in the country's forests -- including tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks -- but for years have been neglected by the government and left to fend for themselves. The Maldharis have long lived with eviction threats, alleged harassment and extortion by officials who say they are guilty of environmental destruction and endangering wildlife in the sanctuary -- one of the last bastions of the rare Asiatic lion. But a new law will for the first time enshrine their right to live in the forests and national parks. However, conservationists are worried this could hamper efforts to save India's endangered wildlife such as lions and tigers. (Rupam Jain Nair, Reuters Alert Net, 1 January 2007)

Natural Aesthetes

Wildlife is wonderful. We don't need any other excuse to protect it, writes George Monbiot. The world, if the biologists' projections turn out to be correct, will soon begin to revert to the fourth day of creation. There will be grass and "herb yielding seed" and "the fruit tree yielding fruit". But "the moving creature that hath life", the "fowl that may fly above the earth", or the "great whales, and every living creature that moveth" may one day be almost unknown to us. Last week the journal Nature published a report suggesting that, by 2050, around a quarter of the world's animal and plant species could die out as a result of global warming. To these we must add the millions threatened by farming, logging, hunting, fishing and introduced species. The future is beginning to look a little lonely.

New WWF Report Finds Wildlife and Humans at Risk from Commonly Used Chemicals (PDF)

Seals, whales, falcons, and polar bears are among a range of wildlife at risk from chemicals used in common consumer products, according to a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) analysis of recent scientific evidence on contamination of wildlife and people. "Products we use every day contain chemicals that can have serious wildlife and human health effects," said Clifton Curtis, director of WWF's Global Toxics Program. "Mounting scientific research is documenting the extent of our exposure to these chemicals." (PDF 446 KB)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 750,000 members, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the fur trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and direct action.

People, parks and poverty: political ecology and biodiversity conservation [pdf]

A recent article in Conservation and Society explores, once again, the parks-people-poverty relationship. In this paper, however, the authors - Bill Adams and Jon Hutton - note that to date this discussion has not been based, to any great extent, on an explicit understanding of the political and economic dimensions of conservation policy. They suggest that one important reason for this is "the disciplinary gulf that exists between predominantly natural science-trained conservation planners and predominantly social science-trained critics of conservation." (Bill Adams and Jon Hutton, Conservation and Society, 2007)

RDS Online

Antibiotics, anaesthetics, vaccines, insulin for diabetes, open heart surgery, kidney dialysis and transplants, treatments for asthma, leukaemia and high blood pressure... these are just some of the major medical advances that have depended on the use of animals in medical research and testing. The medical benefits of animal research are a good starting point for the public debate about the use of animals in research and testing. RDS is the UK organisation which represents doctors and scientists in this debate. The information in RDS Online is based on very thorough research and understanding of the facts, historical and scientific. In this debate there are many single issue pressure groups seeking to abolish animal research completely and immediately. But it would be extremely difficult to develop new medical treatments and cures without the use of animals. So animal research must continue if we are to solve serious medical problems like cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, AIDS, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, and malaria. Not all medical research needs to use live animals - useful results are also obtained by using computers, studying cells and tissues, and some studies that are done on patients and human populations. RDS Online puts the research processes in context, to explain when animals need to be used. RDS believes that research using animals should be well regulated, conducted humanely and only when there is no alternative. We work with welfare groups and government to promote good practice in laboratory animal welfare and the development of non-animal replacement methods.

SAVE THE SAOLA!

the saola, a rare animal discovered just 15 years ago by a team of scientists from WWF and the Vietnamese Ministry of Forestry. It was the first large mammal discovered anywhere in the world since 1936 and scientists are still trying to figure out whether it is a goat, antelope or cow species. Only 11 saola have ever been recorded alive by scientists and fewer than 250 are estimated to exist today.

Support a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare

A Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare would have a real, long-term impact on the welfare of billions of animals worldwide. it would ensure the needs of animals are 'front of mind' when governments formulate and implement policies concerning animals. Improving animal welfare can also improve the welfare of over one billion people who rely on animals worldwide. WSPA's Animals Matter To Me is a global effort to obtain a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. Taking part is easy - just add your name to the petition.

The Animal Rescue Site

Launched in July 2002, The Animal Rescue Site focuses the power of the Internet on a specific need -- providing food for some of the 27 million unwanted animals given to shelters in the US every year. Individuals from around the world visit the site each day to click the "Feed an Animal in Need" button and help feed rescued animals. Over 10 million animals are put to death every year in the US alone because they are unwanted, abandoned, or abused. A click on the "Feed an Animal in Need" button will provide a bowl of food in a warm, caring environment for one of these animals at no cost to you.

Wildlife Expert Persuades Notorious Rebel Army To Join Fight To Save Rare White Rhino

A wildlife expert has told how he convinced an African rebel army, which has fought a bloody struggle with the Ugandan government for nearly two decades, to sign up to a conservation project to save one of the world's rarest animals. The Lord's Resistance Army - the leaders of which are wanted for war crimes by the international criminal court - is to join with scientists to protect the northern white rhino, of which only four are thought to remain in the wild. As part of an ongoing peace process, the rebels have pledged not to harm the animals and to tell wildlife experts if they see one. (The Guardian, September 13, 2006)
