Fair trade timber: A review of current practice, institutional structures and possible ways forward

Certification, eco-labelling and social auditing have all been set up to improve the forest sector. High hopes for forest livelihoods and poverty reduction have surrounded their use but each has had its limitations. It is now time to examine other complementary instruments. Fair trade may be one such instrument. An alliance of institutions interested in promoting fair trade timber is beginning to form. This report outlines some of the options for building on this momentum and enhancing local returns from responsible forestry. (Duncan Macqueen, Annie Dufey, Bindi Patel, IIED,

Forest carbon and local livelihoods: assessment of opportunities and policy recommendations

18 October 2002- NEW DELHI and WASHINGTON, D.C. - As the next major meeting on global climate change opens in New Delhi next week, a potentially controversial report concludes that deals to counteract the carbon emissions of smokestack industries could benefit more than the environment. The report reveals that carbon-trading deals in forestry could sharply reduce poverty among the rural poor, while also providing businesses with an inexpensive way to "off-set" their carbon emissions.

Forest Information Update

Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free weekly email newsletter sent to people interested in the inventorying and monitoring of natural resources. FIU is produced by Forest Information Services and is supported by organizations, agencies and individuals working in the natural resources field. All the FIU's are now posted on the GAOF portal www.foresters.org/portal under Topic (Forest Information Update). Currently FIU is sent to about 7,000 email addresses world-wide including distribution through the Forest Net (run out of Finland), Global Association of Online Foresters (UK), International Forestry List (Malaysia); the Tropical Resources Forum and the Conserve Africa Group (managed and owned by Conserve Africa Foundation www.conserveafrica.org), and Forest Inventory (USA) as well as the lists I maintain. Many recipients forward FIU to their own mailing lists. To subscribe, unsubscribe, change your email address, or sponsor, contact Gyde at gyde@comcast.net

Forests in Sustainable Development - A Quick Report Card on Progress Since Rio (PDF)

By Stephen Bass, International Institute for Environment and Development, UK. A report prepared for the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 (PDF 67Kb). "Initiatives that treat forestry as a 'sector' seem to be increasingly prone to failure. Forests are resources that other sectors use, in many different and often competing ways, to produce both public and private goods and services. The results of this use can vary widely in their contribution to sustainable development, from forest asset liquidation (land clearance for agriculture and infrastructure), to direct productive uses (plantation and natural forest management), to protective uses (wildlife conservation and water supply)."

Gender Analysis and Forestry: International Training Package

The Gender Analysis and Forestry Training Package contains ready-to-use training materials and training development materials. It aims to show how gender analysis can be used in forestry work and how to train others in its use. Based on a programme conducted in six Asian countries, the package was developed using cutting edge participatory methods. The training materials include: frameworks for training at the field and management levels; and, a set of case studies from the Asia Programme. The training development materials include sections on: designing and implementing participatory training programmes; designing and conducting participatory training workshops; and, how to use rapid rural appraisal to develop case studies. There is also a guide on how to use the package, as well as a booklet for planners and policy makers that explains the use of gender analysis in forestry.

Help save Europe's oldest lowland forest

The Białowieża Forest situated on the border of Poland and Belarus is the last remaining natural lowland forest in Europe. It is abundant in wildlife, particularly on the Polish side, and is home to lynxes, wolves as well as European bison whose history is closely related to the history of the forest's conservation. Unfortunately, the natural wealth and reputation of this unique place have not ensured its effective protection, with only 17% of the Polish area protected as a national park. If the exploitation of therest of the park continues it soon may be too late. Help save this truly special place by signing our petition demanding that the national park is extended to cover the whole area of the Białowieża Forest in Poland

If you go down to the woods today...

To stop further climate change, rather than stop the flow of oil, coal and gas, the offset industry tells us that we can continue as normal. We can drive as much as want, fly as much as we want, and eat our non-organic Coldplay mangoes in the Canadian winter. We need not reduce; in fact we can now consume our way out of the problem. Now we can buy trees and thus 'neutralize' our impacts. It is a seductive argument. But it is a falsehood - a con. (Adam Ma'ani, New Internationalist, July 2006)

Illegal Logging in Central America: Tackling its Impacts on Governace and Poverty

Website containing reports and information on illegal logging in Honduras and Nicaragua and its effects on the poverty, sustainabilty, and good governance. 'It includes clandestine production (which escapes all state control, pays no tax, and is not included in official figures) as well as legalised production (accompanied by certain documents and licenses, paying appropriate taxes, and entering in the statistics - but which has actually been produced fraudulently, without conforming to what was authorised).'

Illegal Logging in Papua and China's Massive Timber Theft [PDF 1186 kb]]

EIA/Telapak, February 2005. The report exposes for the first time the complex web of middlemen and financiers from across the region responsible for masterminding the theft of Indonesia's forests. From the millionaire timber barons in Jakarta and the officials on their payrolls, the story traces the role of multinational companies in Malaysia, brokers in Singapore and log dealers in Hong Kong. It reveals how in a just a few short years, a small anchorage in eastern China has been transformed into the largest tropical log trading port in the world, while a nearby town has become a global centre for wood flooring manufacture, with 500 huge factories consuming one merbau tree every minute of every working day. Much of this flooring finds its way to consuming countries, including the USA and UK.

India's forgotten tribes gain rights over forests

Over 40 million of India's most impoverished and marginalised people live in the country's forests -- including tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and national parks -- but for years have been neglected by the government and left to fend for themselves. The Maldharis have long lived with eviction threats, alleged harassment and extortion by officials who say they are guilty of environmental destruction and endangering wildlife in the sanctuary -- one of the last bastions of the rare Asiatic lion. But a new law will for the first time enshrine their right to live in the forests and national parks. However, conservationists are worried this could hamper efforts to save India's endangered wildlife such as lions and tigers. (Rupam Jain Nair, Reuters Alert Net, 1 January 2007)

Partners in Crime: How Dutch Timber Traders Break Their Promises, Trade Illegal Timber and Fuel Destruction of the Paradise Forests

A staggering 80% of the world's ancient forests have already been destroyed or degraded and much of what remains is under threat from illegal and destructive logging. The member states of the European Union (EU) play a key role in fueling the international demand for timber products from illegal and destructive logging. Being a large importer and trader of timber in the EU, the Dutch timber industry also plays a significant role. Greenpeace calls for the government to make every effort to ban the trade of illegal timber and to aim for an import ban on illegally harvested timber (Greenpeace, April 2007).

Potential and Challenges of Payments for Ecosystem Services from Tropical Forests [pdf]

Payments for ecosystem services (PES) from tropical forests have high potential for sustainable forest management (SFM) and conservation, through giving greater value to forests than less sustainable land uses. However, PES will only succeed with fair property rights, good governance and supportive policies from outside the forestry sector (Michael Richards and Michael Jenkins, ODI,2007) .
