2006 Environmental Performance Index

By identifying specific targets for environmental performance and measuring how close each country comes to these established goals, the Pilot 2006 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) provides benchmarks for current national pollution control and natural resource management results. The issue-by-issue and aggregate rankings facilitate cross-country comparisons both globally and within relevant peer groups. The EPI thus provides a powerful tool for improving policymaking and shifting environmental decisionmaking onto firmer analytic foundations.

Can the Anchor Hold? Rethinking the United Nations Environment Programme for the 21st Century

This publication assesses the performance of UNEP as the mandated anchor institution for the global environment. The report takes a look at UNEP's performance in regards to key functions that are necessary for an effective international environmental organization and offers policy recommendations for governments, UNEP, and the UN Secretary-General on steps for reform. This report aims to reinvigorate the debate on the architecture of global environmental governance in the context of larger UN reform discussions. Earth Island Journal

The Earth Island Journal was first published in 1982 as a class project at Stanford University. A quarterly magazine since 1987, EIJ has won significant acclaim for its groundbreaking coverage of environmental and social issues. In line with its innovative editorial efforts, the Earth Island Journal was the first 'tree-free' periodical in the United States. As part of this effort the Journal was one of the first voices to bring attention to the 'tree-free' movement.

Nature: poor people's wealth [PDF 1908.66 KB]

Friends of the Earth International, July 2005. In this publication, FoEI illustrates the tragic cycle between the over-exploitation of the environment; loss of cultural, political and economic self-determination; inequity; hunger; and poverty. FoEI also looks on the bright side, and offer living proof that communities around the world are able to lead rich, dignified and fulfilling lives when they are in charge of their natural resources. Rural people, especially women and indigenous peoples, often have a long- standing symbiotic relationship with their local environment. To many of these people, and particularly those who are considered 'poor' in the economic sense of the word, a fulfilling life is about much more than simply money or possessions. It is about their access to and control over natural resources and their involvement in decision- making processes about these resources.

World Resources 2005

The thesis of World Resources 2005 is that income from ecosystems-what we call environmental income -- can act as a fundamental stepping stone in the economic empowerment of the rural poor. This requires that the poor manage ecosystems so that they support stable productivity over time. Productive ecosystems are the basis of a sustainable income stream from nature. World Resources 2005 details the steps necessary to empower the poor to use ecosystems both wisely and for wealth. Using examples and case studies, the report traces a route to greater environmental income. Working at the cutting edge of sustainable development, it lays out the governance changes necessary to give the poor the legal, financial, and management capacity to use nature for wealth creation without depleting their fragile resource base.
