- What makes water sector partnerships effective?
-
Multi-sector partnerships (MSPs) between public, private, civil society and donor organisations in the water sector are difficult to create and even harder to maintain. Whether an MSP seeks to provide specific services, or has broader ambitions of systemic change in water delivery, it is vital to identify what enables or constrains effective partnerships. (Building Partnerships for Development).

- Who Controls Ecuador's Water?
-
Bechtel and its subsidiaries won the contracts to run the water and sanitation services, in Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. Now, more than six years later, the residents of Guayaquil are demanding damages from the company for water contamination, an end to water cut-offs, and a return to local, public control (Center for International Policy, October 2007).

- World Creating Food Bubble Economy Based on Unsustainable Use of Water
-
March 13, 2003-2, Lester R. Brown, Earth Policy Institute. As world water demand has tripled over the last half-century, it has exceeded the sustainable yield of aquifers in scores of countries, leading to falling water tables. In effect, governments are satisfying the growing demand for food by overpumping groundwater, a measure that virtually assures a drop in food production when the aquifer is depleted. Knowingly or not, governments are creating a "food bubble" economy.

- World Water Day 22 March 2005-"Water For Life"
-
The theme for this year's World Water Day challenges us to look at "Water for life". The United Nations General Assembly at its 58th session in December 2003 proclaimed the years 2005-2015 as the international "Water for Life Decade". The decade sets the world's goals on a "greater focus on water related issues, striving to ensure the participation of women in water related development efforts and further cooperation at all levels to achieve water-related targets of the Millennium Development Goals". Similar to the last 3 World Water Day campaigns in the Pacific, SOPAC will collaborate with Live and Learn, a regional non-governmental organisation in environmental education, to develop this year's campaign and to provide country representatives, focal points, schools and other interested parties with information packs and materials.
