International Right To Know Day

28 September is international Right to Know Day - a day on which people across the world unite to stand up for their fundamental right to know what their governments are doing in their name. The UN General Assembly, as far back as 1946, declared that the right to information is a fundamental right and the touchstone for all freedoms to which the United Nations is consecrated. Yet, across the world only around 65 countries operate right to information laws, and in the Commonwealth, the figure is only twelve out of 53 countries. (Human Rights Initiative, 25 September 2006)
