By resolution 49/214 of 23 December 1994, the General Assembly decided to celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous People on 9 August every year during the International Decade of the World's Indigenous People. In 2004 the Assembly proclaimed a Second International Decade by resolution 59/174. The goal of this Decade is to further strengthen international cooperation for the solution of problems faced by indigenous people in such areas as culture, education, health, human rights, the environment, and social and economic development.

Annual meetings are statutory occasions for Governors of ADB members to provide guidance on ADB administrative, financial, and operational directions. The General Assembly declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, to be observed beginning in 1993. 28 September is international Right to Know Day - a day on which people across the world unite to stand up for their fundamental right to know what their governments are doing in their name. The UN General Assembly, as far back as 1946, declared that the right to information is a fundamental right and the touchstone for all freedoms to which the United Nations is consecrated. Yet, across the world only around 65 countries operate right to information laws, and in the Commonwealth, the figure is only twelve out of 53 countries. (Human Rights Initiative, 25 September 2006)

This site is dedicated to the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty, celebrated on October 17th. The day, officially recognised by the United Nations in 1992, was born from the initiative of thousands of people who gathered at the Human Rights Plaza in Paris, France in 1987.
