- Forum for Food Security in Southern Africa
-
The purpose of the Forum for Food Security in Southern Africa project is to provide a platform for improved linkages between food security analysis, policy making and implementation in the Southern Africa region. The outputs of country issues papers, regional theme papers, international electronic discussions and country policy seminars are intended to generate insights and policy options drawing on longitudinal research in the region and comparative international evidence that it is hoped will prove useful to stakeholders. The Forum for Food Security in Southern Africa provides a platform for all relevant stakeholders to discuss the medium to long term causes of the apparent increased vulnerability to food insecurity in Southern Africa, and to generate policy options to address this. It covers the region as a whole and five specific countries: Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It intends to bring together those in government, official donors, NGOs, civil society, the private sector, and international and regional researchers concerned with food security.

- Not Eligible: The Politicization of Food in Zimbabwe (PDF)
-
Human Rights Watch, October 24, 2003. Zimbabwean authorities discriminate against perceived political opponents by denying them access to food programs, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. International relief agencies in Zimbabwe fail to ensure that access to food is based on need alone and is not biased by domestic or international political concerns. The 51-page report, "Not Eligible: The Politicization of Food in Zimbabwe," documents how food is denied to suspected supporters of Zimbabwe's main opposition party and to residents of former commercial farms resettled under the country's "fast-track" land reform program. The report examines the widespread politicization of the government's subsidized grain program, managed by the Grain Marketing Board, as well as the far less extensive manipulation of international food aid. (19/09/2002) The number of people affected by the drought in southern Africa was growing more rapidly than anticipated, Carolyn McAskie, United Nations Deputy Relief Coordinator, told correspondents at a Headquarters press briefing this afternoon. Briefing the journalists on her recent visit to the six most affected countries in that region -- Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique -- where she had accompanied James Morris, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) and Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for humanitarian needs in southern Africa, she said that assessment figures indicated that the number of affected people had grown from 12.8 million to 14.4 million people.

- Sahel: A Prisoner of Starvation? - A Case Study of the 2005 Food Crisis in Niger
-
This report reviews the 2005 food crisis in Niger and assesses the response of the Nigerien government and the international donor community. It explores the role markets play in alleviating or aggravating food needs of the population. It examines the outcome of international economic reforms and development policies implemented in Niger during the past 25 years, finding that they appear to be driven by ideology instead of by a comprehensive analysis of development issues in the country. Implementation of policies emanating from the international financial institutions, such as the World Bank, withdrew state intervention from social and economic sectors. The report recommends strategies that can help make hunger in Sahel a thing of the past. (Frederic Mousseau with Anuradha Mittal, Oakland Institute, October 2006)

23 August - Next to HIV/AIDS, the food crisis in southern Africa - in which some 13 million people were at risk of starvation - was the most serious humanitarian emergency in the world, a senior United Nations official said today. Speaking at a press briefing in Geneva, James Morris, the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Envoy for the humanitarian crisis in southern Africa, said that the crisis was brought on by drought and poverty, and complicated by government policies (UN News Service).
