- Bosnia Rape Victims Forgotten
-
Victims of mass rapes in Bosnia are being shunned by family and friends. Most of them are stigmatised and excluded from society if people around them come to know the truth. The children conceived in rapes were mostly pushed into orphanages in Bosnia or neighbouring Croatia, and in rare cases given for adoption. They grow up knowing nothing about their parents. - "On Our Watch" - A Documentary About Genocide in Darfur
-
Three years of fighting in Darfur have destroyed hundreds of villages, displaced 2.2 million and led to more than 400,000 deaths. President Bush has accused the government of Sudan of genocide, but the U.S. has taken few concrete actions to stop the fighting. Narrated by Sam Waterston, this 11-minute documentary tells the story of those who have lost their loved ones to this war, those who are fighting to survive and those who are working to bring peace to the region. - 2004 World Survey on the Role of Women in Development--Women and International Migration
-
The migration of women has always been an important component of international migration. As of 2000, 49 per cent of all international migrants were women or girls, and the proportion of females among international migrants had reached 51 per cent in more developed regions. A gender perspective is essential to understanding both the causes and consequences of international migration. This report sets out recommendations that, if adopted, will improve the situation of migrant, refugee and trafficked women (Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, 2006).

- Afghanistan: Uncounted and Discounted
-
Domestic violence against Afghan women appears endemic, and attacks against them usually take place with impunity, This study of more than 1,300 cases reported to authorities between January 2003 and June 2005, found that sexual, physical or psychological violence against women affects all branches of Afghan society, regardless of the woman's marital status or her level of education or employment. - Broken bodies - broken dreams: violence against women exposed
-
Violence against women is a pandemic, one that transcends the bounds of geography, race, culture, class and religion. It touches virtually every community, in virtually every corner of the globe. Too often sanctified by custom and reinforced by institutions, it thrives on widespread impunity for perpetrators in what remains a patriarchal world that is reluctant to grant women equal rights and protection from gender-based violence. This book is a powerful testimony of the different types of gender-based violence experienced by women and girls worldwide throughout their lives, through the use of photographs, individual case studies and illustrative text. - Challenges and Good Practices In Support of Women in Conflict and Post-Conflict Situations
-
This report summarizes views on assisting displaced women in conflict and post-conflict situations as presented at the UNFPA Expert Meeting in Tunisia. The first goal of the meeting was to bridge the gap between knowledge and policies regarding women's protection needs -- or gender-specific protection issues. The second goal was to identify specific means for the integration of emergency-related programming into the mainstream of UNFPA work.

- Closing the gap: Gender-Based Violence in South Africa
-
In a country long sickened by the frighteningly high level of sexual violence, one of the greatest challenges facing South Africa is closing the gap between the rhetoric of gender equality and the reality on the ground. Other articles in this collection include: "Microfinance also buys freedom from abuse", "Men slowly turning away from gender-based violence", "Tide of violence against women drowns out homophobia", "'I left her in the end because I nearly killed her'", "'I was raped by a person I knew'". New Zealand is no exception and it has been said that this violence should be treated as a national emergency. - Disabled at Greater Risk of HIV Infection
-
The fact that disabled people are more likely to have received little or no education and to be out of employment places them among the world's poorest, most stigmatised and most marginalised. While the disabled are at also greater risk of violence or rape, they are less likely to obtain police intervention, legal protection or health care. Poverty and social sanctions against marrying a disabled person mean that disabled women, in particular, are likely to become involved in a series of unstable relationships. They are often targeted by abusers who assume they are non-sexual and therefore safe. (Tafi Murinzi, 2006)

- Facts & Figures on Violence Against Women
-
UNIFEM. Statistics paint a horrifying picture of the social consequences of violence against women. Violence against women is a public health emergency and a major cause of death and disability for women 16 to 44 years of age. In a World Bank report, it was estimated that violence against women was as serious a cause of death and incapacity among women of reproductive age as cancer, and a greater cause of ill health than traffic accidents and malaria combined. The following facts and figures from around the world illustrate the problem: * Domestic and Intimate Violence * Sexual Violence in Non-Conflict Situations * Harmful Traditional Practices * Trafficking in Women and Girls * HIV/AIDS and Violence * Crimes Against Women in War and Armed Conflict The entire document is available for download as a PDF file (92 KB).

- Femicide On the Rise in Latin America
-
On the eve of International Women's Day 2006, a delegation of Latin American women made an historic journey to Washington, DC. Rather than celebrating the gains women have made through their many struggles, the group arrived at the headquarters of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of the Organization of American States with an alarming message: femicide, the murder of women, is spreading. By Kent Paterson, IRC Americas Program.

- Five Years On: No justice for sexual violence in Darfur
-
This 44-page report documents the widespread prevalence of sexual violence throughout Darfur, and details incidents of violent rape perpetrated on girls as young as 11 years old. The government of Sudan has failed to rein in the abuse, much of which is carried out by their own soldiers and allied militia. In spite of the presence of international peacekeepers in Darfur, they have to date been under-resourced and unable to protect women and girls from rape and other forms of violence (Human Rights Watch, 7 April 2008).

- Georgia: More shelters desperately needed
-
There is a desperate need for more shelters in Georgia. Although the recently-adopted Law on Domestic Violence stipulates that shelters should be set up under the Ministry of Labour, Healthcare and Social Protection, action to implement this has been postponed until 2008. Meanwhile the queue of women waiting for a place gets longer. Write to the Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs urging him to provide more shelters for women suffering from violence in the home.
