- Trade is a Women's Issue
-
Foreign Policy In Focus, Volume 7, Number 15, December 2002. By Bama Athreya, International Labor Rights Fund. From coffee to computers, women workers provide the labor that creates the goods that appear in the world's supermarkets and department stores. Women workers are good for trade, but is trade good for women workers? U.S. and global trade rules have a long way to go before they will provide women with the protections needed to ensure even basic and decent workplaces. Key Points: * Global trade's profits rely on the labor of women workers worldwide, as women make up more than half the work force in the light manufacturing industries that provide most of the world's household goods. * Women workers face a host of problems including low wages, long hours, unsafe working conditions, harassment, sexual abuse, and discrimination. * Trade negotiators have begun to discuss women's issues but are still a long way from developing practical protections for women workers.

- Turkish women gain voice in fight to stay secular
-
Turkish women are on the street protesting as never before as the fight to preserve Turkey's secular status gives them a louder political voice that could translate into parliamentary seats in this summer's elections. Women have dominated recent rallies in Turkish cities against the ruling Islamist-rooted AK Party, fearful of what the party might do if, as expected, it wins another big majority. - Who Makes the News?', Global Media Monitoring Project 2005
-
Now more than ever, news is the major source of information, ideas and opinions for people across the world. News is a mirror on the world. But news has traditionally been reported by men, and tends to be about men. Women's experiences and opinions are badly neglected in most news coverage. A report from the 2005 Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP), coordinated by the World Association for Christian Communication, reviews almost 40,000 sources to provide a picture of news reporting since 1995. In particular, the report focuses on the balance of news between men and women: who is covered in the news, in what way and by whom. (Margaret Gallagher, Who Makes the News?, 2006)
