'Global Governance' or the World Social Forum: Divergent analysis, strategy and tactics

This paper considers three different conceptualizations - three politico-ideological perspectives within civil society - on global-scale economics and geopolitics. The standpoints can be termed 'global justice movements', 'Third World nationalism' and the 'Post-Washington Consensus' (Patrick Bond, 2006).

Ciranda: International Independent Information Exchange

Conceived by the staff of the Porto Alegre 2003 and recreated every year during the World Social Forum, the Ciranda has become a trademark of the meeting that searches for global alternatives. It brings together hundreds of journalists and dozens of independent print and electronic publications from all over the world. It offers a special coverage of the Porto Alegre meeting in six languages through the Internet.

Open Space Forum

Two strands of opinion dominate the discourse of what the World Social Forum means, and what it should be. One strand of opinion perceives the WSF as a global social justice movement. The other strand of opinion perceives the WSF as a space, an open space where individuals, organizations, and movements come together, share, exchange, build bridges, relationships, strategize, etc. This webspace is an attempt to advance these explorations in/of open spaces: * to disseminate material generated from projects, ideas, explorations, articles, and discussions happening within and outside the WSF around the concept of open spaces. * to encourage discussion around these ideas and to encourage reflection on the nature, role, and place of open spaces (or perhaps the process of opening spaces). * to act as a hub that brings together people interested in these explorations, and to facilitate interaction between them. * to also examine the role of the web and other internet technologies, not just as a tool in these explorations, but also as an integral component of global open spaces.

Social Forum Aotearoa

The Social Forum Aotearoa aims to gather together people who share the desire for a world with more respect -- for ourselves, each other and the environment. It is inspired by the World Social Forum (WSF), which since its first meeting in Porte Alegre, Brazil in 2001 has helped transform the globalisation debate. Since then many national and regional Forums have been held around the world. The first Social Forum was held on the campus of Te Wananga O Aotearoa at Porirua, 21-23 November 2003.

The Americas Social Forum (ASF)

The Americas Social Forum (ASF) is part of the World Social Forum (WSF) process initiated in 2001 and has become the largest space for the articulation of social initiatives, the development of critical thinking, and the construction of alternatives to the neoliberal order, under the common belief that "Another World is Possible".

The Global Women's Rights Movement: Power Politics around the United Nations and the World Social Forum

This paper examines the discourse, inputs and reorganization of strategies that emanated from the lobbying of women's rights movements vis-à-vis global agencies like the United Nations (UN), as well as the World Social Forum. Harcourt sets out some key strategic questions for consideration: How much have women's movements achieved by working in collaboration with the UN? Is there a recognizable global women's rights movement as it is perceived on the UN stage? Is there such an entity as a global women's movement, or is it just a skilfully played mirage? (Wendy Harcourt, UNRISD, 1 August 2006)
