- Population and HIV/AIDS 2005
-
This wall chart, produced by the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, presents the latest available data and information on HIV/AIDS for all countries and regions of the world, with emphasis on government policies and programmes for the prevention of the disease, and the treatment, care and support of persons affected by it. The chart indicates that national and international responses to HIV / AIDS remain inadequate to address the severity of the epidemic.

- Populations, Development and HIV / AIDS, with a particular emphasis on Poverty: concise report [PDF]
-
This report, prepared by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs: Population Division (2005) highlights the urgent need to combat the AIDS pandemic, which is particularly affecting the poorest countries in the world. The report concludes that the most effective approach to thwarting the HIV/AIDS epidemic is to implement a combination of strategies that reduce risks, diminish vulnerability and mitigate impact. Although the international community has responded to the challenge of AIDS with an unprecedented level of financial resources, it is still less than half of what is needed to effectively conquer AIDS.

- Practical Guidelines for Intensifying HIV Prevention: Towards Universal Access
-
To strengthen national efforts countries are being encouraged to 'know your epidemic' by identifying the behaviours and social conditions that are most associated with HIV transmission, that undermine the ability of those most vulnerable to HIV infection to access and use HIV information and services. 'Knowing your epidemic' provides the basis for countries to 'know your response', by recognizing the organizations and communities that are, or could be, contributing to the response, and by critically assessing the extent to which the existing response is meeting the needs of those most vulnerable to HIV infection.

- Programming in the Era of AIDS: WFP'S Response to HIV/AIDS (PDF)
-
United Nations World Food Program, 5-7 February 2003. This paper reviews the relationship between food security and HIV/AIDS and identifies specific vulnerable groups. It also identifies specific programme areas where WFP has a significant role to play in supporting the food security of families and communities affected by AIDS. It is important to note that all activities will be designed following existing policies. This paper highlights some key programming areas where a different emphasis and modified approach are necessary to meet the emerging needs of food-insecure families and individuals deeply affected by the AIDS pandemic.

- Promoting the female condom to refugees [pdf]
-
UNHCR and its partners have been providing male condoms since the late 1990s. However, uptake remains alarmingly low. The public health rationale for condom use in the refugee setting is compelling, as refugees are particularly vulnerable to HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This article discusses whether it would be more successful to promote the female condom, a female-initiated barrier method of contraception, in disease prevention? (Forced Migration, 2006)

Aids is a global epidemic, affecting as many as 40 million people. 30 million of these are African, yet the vast majority cannot receive the anti-retroviral drugs that have changed the lives of victims in the west. In collaboration with the photographer Gideon Mendel, Guardian Unlimited presents an interactive movie telling the personal stories of South Africans who experience this harsh divide. You will need the free download of Macromedia Shockwave Flash 5 to watch this movie. (By Gideon Mendel, The Guardian, 2005)

- Second Generation Surveillance Surveys of HIV, STIs and risk behaviours in six Pacific Island countries (2004-2005)
-
This 125 page report shows that rising numbers of sexually transmitted infections in Pacific Island countries threaten to spark the spread of HIV in the region. Surveys of HIV, other sexually transmitted infections and risky sexual behaviour conducted in six sentinel countries - Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu - indicate a ripe scenario for the spread of HIV in the Pacific.
