- A Decade After Cairo: Women's Health in a Free Market Economy
-
The 1994 UN International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo was heralded as a "quantum leap" forward and a "paradigm shift in the discourse about population and development". Its Programme of Action, endorsed by 179 countries and intended to establish international and national population policy for the following two decades, was the first and most comprehensive international policy document to promote the concepts of reproductive rights and reproductive health. One decade later, however, maternal mortality worldwide remains high. Some 600,000 women die each year, 95 per cent of them in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia, and 18 million are left disabled or chronically ill because of largely preventable complications during pregnancy or childbirth. This briefing summarises the actions of several women's groups to influence the outcome of the 1994 UN International Conference on Population and Development and evaluates with hindsight some of the successes and failures of the Programme of Action. - Action Alert: ICPD Programme of Action Under Attack
-
Prepared by Action Canada for Population and Development. From December 11-17, 2002, the Fifth Asian and Pacific Population Conference (APPC) will be held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. At the Second Preparatory Committee Meeting for this Conference held October 29-31, negotiations were held on a draft plan of action. The text will be finalized in December. If it were adopted in its current form, the current draft document would be a serious step back from the Programme of Action adopted at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), held in Cairo. Furthermore, to the shock of many delegations, the Bush administration announced at this meeting that it was unable to reaffirm its commitment to the ICPD Programme of Action and that this position was not negotiable.

- Asia-Pacific Population & Policy: "Population and environmental challenges in Asia"
-
by Vinod Mishra, 'Asia-Pacific Population & Policy' , No. 63 Abstract Population growth and economic development contribute to many environmental problems in Asia. These include pressure on land, habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity, water scarcity and water pollution, air pollution, and global warming and climate change. Projections of future resource requirements and environmental stress are worrying, whether the focus is on population numbers alone or on the effects of poorly planned economic development and changing consumption patterns. The work of the Asian MetaCentre will be largely based on collaboration in the internet, and through a series of research seminars and training workshops. Substantively, analysis will focus on the complex set of Population Development-Environment (PDE) interactions in the region, on population forecasting and projections, age-structural transitions and ageing, changing family structures, fertility, international migration in the region, and the consequences of those population dynamics on human well-being and health. The Asian MetaCentre's major aims include networking among Asian population experts, capacity building and the advancement of research methodologies, in-depth case studies and collaborative researches.

- Curriculum Kit on Population and Development
-
A major focus of ARHA's activities is educational work with young people. Over the past few years we have run a series of youth conferences titled "Planet Without a Plan". These are educational seminars which generally involve groups of students from several schools. Topics discussed include sustainable development, global population issues, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, reproductive rights, gender equity and the environment. This kit is intended to complement the youth conferences by providing ideas and resources for teachers and students to work on these issues within the classroom. The kit was originally produced for Victorian Schools in 2000. As the issues covered in the kit change so rapidly, the kit was updated in December 2001. Where possible, website and other contact details for relevant organizations have been provided so people using the kit can continue to update the information. The kit comes with handouts ready for use in the classroom, and can be downloaded.

- Decades of Disparity III: ethnic and socio-economic inequalities in mortality, New Zealand 1981 - 1999 (PDF, 957 kB)
-
Decades of Disparity III is the third (and last) in a series of monitoring reports which use census and mortality records to monitor trends in ethnic and socio-economic inequalities in mortality. It finds that socioeconomic status is reflected in mortality rate. Māori were disproportionately represented in lower socioeconomic strata however measured. Even within socioeconomic strata Māori/non-Māori inequalities in mortality largely persist. There was a widening inequalities in socioeconomic resources (especially position in the labour market) between Māori and non-Māori during the 1980s and 1990s. (Ministry of Health, May 2006)

- Growing Up Urban
-
This is the second edition of the Youth Supplement to UNFPA's State of World Population. The 2007 report focuses on urbanization; the Youth Supplement addresses the challenges and promises of urbanization as they affect young people. In 2008, for the first time, more than half of the world's population will live in urban areas, and the number and proportion of urban young people is increasing dramatically. Most will be born into poor families, where fertility tends to be higher (UNFPA, 2007).

- Population Explosion Threatens to Trap Africa in Cycle of Poverty
-
There are 27.7 million people in Uganda. But by 2025 the population will almost double to 56 million. Startling as they are, the projections are feasible, and a glance at some of the variables shows why. A typical Ugandan woman gives birth to seven children - an extraordinarily high fertility rate that has remained largely unchanged for more than 30 years. Half the population is under 15, and will soon move into childbearing age. Fewer than one in five married women has access to contraception. Taken together, the factors point to a population explosion that has demographers and family planning experts warning that efforts to cut poverty are doomed unless urgent measures are taken. - State of World Population 2007: Unleashing the Potential of Urban Growth
-
In 2008, for the first time, more than half of the world's population will be living in urban areas. By 2030, towns and cities will be home to almost 5 billion people. The urban population of Africa and Asia will double in less than a generation. This unprecedented shift could enhance development and promote sustainability-or it could deepen poverty and accelerate environmental degradation. The 2007 State of World Population report outlines the challenges and opportunities presented by the coming, inevitable urban growth. It also dispels many misconceptions about urbanization and calls on policymakers to take concerted, proactive steps to harness the potential of cities to improve the lives of all (UNFPA, 2007).
