25 Years of AIDS - Factsheet [pdf]

In June 1981, scientists in the United States reported the first clinical evidence of a disease that would later become known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. Twenty five years later, the AIDS epidemic has spread to every corner of the world. Around 40 million people are today living with HIV and over 25 million have died of AIDS. But 25 years of struggle to control the epidemic have also yielded a growing list of breakthroughs. This factsheet outlines the development since 1981. (UNAIDS, 2006)

PAI Online Index of Donor Country Spending

PAI Online Index of Donor Country Spending Population Action International has launched a new online index of donor country spending and an update to its 2004 report, Progress & Promises: Trends in International Assistance for Reproductive Health and Population. New data illustrate that donor countries continue to fall far short of the commitments outlined at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). Though total population assistance trended upward, when adjusted for inflation those resources are at least 40 percent short of what is required from donors to achieve universal access to basic reproductive health care by 2015. Practical Guidelines for Intensifying HIV Prevention: Towards Universal Access

To strengthen national efforts countries are being encouraged to 'know your epidemic' by identifying the behaviours and social conditions that are most associated with HIV transmission, that undermine the ability of those most vulnerable to HIV infection to access and use HIV information and services. 'Knowing your epidemic' provides the basis for countries to 'know your response', by recognizing the organizations and communities that are, or could be, contributing to the response, and by critically assessing the extent to which the existing response is meeting the needs of those most vulnerable to HIV infection.
