RIGHTS-AUSTRALIA: Apology, No Compensation For Lost Generations

hile aboriginal groups have welcomed the Australian government's pledge to apologise to the 'stolen generations', they argue that the gesture should be backed up with compensation. But earlier this month, Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin ruled out such a fund for people taken from their families (IPS, 28 January 2008).

The Death Penalty---Amnesty International's Fight

The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. It violates the right to life. It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent. It has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments.Amnesty International works for an end to executions and the abolition of the death penalty everywhere (Amnesty International).

The UN Human Rights Norms For Business: Towards Legal Accountability (PDF)

This booklet provides an introduction to the UN Human Rights Norms for Business. It answers a number of questions about the UN Norms and their legal status, and includes an overview of their development, background on the drafting process, and a description of the content and legal status of the UN Norms. In Amnesty International's view, governments, advocates and companies should support the UN Human Rights Norms for Business as offering an authoritative and comprehensive statement of the responsibilities of companies in relation to human rights. The UN Norms provide clarity and credibility amidst many competing voluntary codes that too often lack international legitimacy, and provide far less detail on human rights issues. Thesaurus of economic, social and cultural rights

By Stephen A. Hansen. American Association for the Advancement of Science. 2002. This thesaurus is basically a tool that introduces economic, social and cultural rights and related concepts and issues. It is a valuable resource because the rights are taken directly from the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, clearly providing the basis for identifying potential violations of such rights. The Thesaurus is user-friendly and it conveys legal contexts in a way that is not cumbersome and intimidating. Economic, social and cultural rights have just been given a much-needed shot in the arm.

UN Human Rights Norms for Businesses

(Amnesty International) Human rights organizations have addressed concerns to businesses for a number of years. Recognizing that economic globalization has expanded the reach of corporate power, advocates have struggled to ensure that companies, no less than other significant actors, are brought within the framework of international human rights rules. A significant step in this direction was taken in August 2003 by the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights when it approved the UN Norms on the Responsibilities of Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises with Regard to Human Rights (also known as UN Norms for Business or UN Norms). The Norms restate existing internationally recognized standards of human rights. They set out in a comprehensive way the key human rights responsibilities of companies. In doing so, they create a powerful tool for advocacy and at the same time provide a useful checklist for those companies keen to improve their human rights record. Some companies have already showed willingness to "road test" the application of the UN Norms during their business operations.

Universal Periodic Review [pdf]

One of the most important innovations of the new Human Rights Council (HRC) is the universal periodic review (UPR) of governments' human rights records. All countries are subject to review under this process which will be a major step away from the selectivity that so often afflicted the Commission on Human Rights in the identification of countries to be scrutinized. Uzbekistan: Stagnation and Uncertainty

Uzbekistan remains a serious risk to itself and its region. While 69-year-old President Islom Karimov shows no signs of relinquishing power, despite the end of his legal term of office more than half a year ago, his eventual departure may lead to a violent power struggle. The economy remains tightly controlled, with regime stalwarts, including the security services and Karimov's daughter Gulnora, exerting excessive influence, which drives away investors and exacerbates poverty. The human rights situation is grave, and those who seek to flee abroad live in constant danger of attempts to return them forcibly (International Crisis Group, 22 August 2007).

Who Benefits From Land Titling? Lessons from Bolivia and Laos (pdf)

Households in the developing world are becoming more feminised through the breakdown of marriages, the impact of civil war and HIV/AIDs. This research in Bolivia and Laos PDR shows, despite legal and policy contexts which support equal access to titling for both men and women, women still face significant social, political and cultural constraints to acquiring rights to land.
