The Institute for Policy Studies

The Institute for Policy Studies is the nation's oldest multi-issue progressive think tank. Since 1963, the Institute has worked with social movements to forge viable and sustainable policies to promote democracy, justice, human rights, and diversity. IPS played key roles in the Civil Rights and anti-war movements in the 1960s, the women's and environmental movements in the 1970s, the anti-apartheid and anti-intervention movements in the 1980s, and the fair trade and environmental justice movements today. Based in Washington, DC, but with links to activists and scholars across the nation and around the world, the Institute serves as a bridge between progressive forces in government and grass-roots activists, and between movements in the U.S. and those in the developing world. We are proud to serve as an alternative voice, helping the least powerful to be heard in the halls of government and in the mainstream and independent press. While other think tanks celebrate the virtues of unrestrained markets and individualism, IPS is building partnerships to create a more responsible society - one built around the values of justice, nonviolence, sustainability, and decency.

Towards Stronger Japan-UK Research Linkages on International Development (pdf)

By Julius Court with Debbie Warrener, Overseas Development Institute, March 2004. The aim of this initiative is to increase the interaction between researchers from Japan and the United Kingdom who work on development issues. Current interaction between researchers is surprisingly limited and further collaboration would be beneficial as both countries are major donors and have different comparative advantages. Increased interaction fits well with current moves to increase information sharing and enhancing aid effectiveness. Based on a range of approaches; including web searches, desk reviews, interviews and visits; the purpose of the initial phase was to assess: current interactions between researchers; interest in the initiative; demand for different products; and how the initiative might be coordinated and funded.

Tracking Routes Towards Impact: Study On Research To Policy Linkages (PDF)

By Jim Coe, Mark Luetchford, Tess Kingham, (id21), October 2002. Research on international development investigates new policies and strategies which can help in the fight against global poverty and for a better standard of living for all. But there is little point to this research if it is not communicated effectively to the people who have the ability to act on its recommendations and implement the necessary changes. Who are these people, what types of research are they interested in, and what are the best ways to communicate this research to them? In early 2002, id21 set about addressing these questions by surveying, interviewing and collecting comments from over 1900 NGO and aid agency staff, politicians, policy-makers, students and researchers The results of these surveys have now been analysed to produce a comprehensive set of insights into how development research and its effective communication can influence policy and help bring about social change.

Unit for Social and Environmental Research

The Unit for Social and Environmental Research (USER) is a relatively new research group affiliated to the Faculty of Social Sciences, Chiang Mai University. It however, has a longer history in other "guises" as part of the International Global Environmental Change Programmes activities in Southeast Asia in particular through START (SARCS). We selected the acronym USER because it reflects our philosophy of trying to do the highest quality research we can while keeping user needs in focus. The main objective of USER is to facilitate and conduct interdisciplinary research on the linkages between social and environmental change. We are thus primarily a research organization. Our current theoretical and conceptual interests include issues of resilience in social-ecological systems, the importance of cross-scale interactions, understanding production-consumption chains, and methods for integrated regional assessment. Our practical interests is to help improve the quality and use of research-based knowledge in decision-making at local, national and global scales. To this end we also help conduct assessments, scenario excerices and synthesis activities, and finally, critical studies of knowledge systems themselves.
