Volunteering for International Development from Australia (VIDA)

VIDA places skilled Australian volunteers in developing countries in the Asia Pacific region. VIDA volunteers work with local counterparts to reduce poverty and achieve sustainable development in the communities in which they work through skills exchange, institutional strengthening and capacity building. VIDA is funded by the Australian government's International Aid Agency, AusAID, as part of the Australian Volunteer Program. A range of assignments are available across sectors that include Education, Environment, Governance, Health, Infrastructure, Rural Development and Trades. VIDA is currently sending volunteers to PNG, Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru, East Timor, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. Soon, it will also be sending volunteers to Burma, China, Mongolia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Assignments can be 1 month to 3 years in length. Financial assistance including airfares, living and accommodation allowances, comprehensive insurance, in-country support and pre-departure training are provided to successful applicants.

Australasian Society for HIV Medicine

ASHM is the Australasian organisation representing the medical and health sector in HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis and related areas. ASHM's International Program is part of Australia's regional response to the HIV epidemic in the Asia-Pacific region. Australian Mekong Resource Centre

AMRC is a resource centre based at the School of Geosciences, University of Sydney. The Centre promotes research, discussion and debate on development and environment issues in the Mekong Region. Established in 1997, AMRC focuses on the role Australia plays in the region as a near neighbour, donor and major trading partner. The Centre is a focal point for information, dialogue and activities in support of an equitable and sustainable development path for the Region.

Australian Reproductive Health Alliance

ARHA was established following the UN Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994. The outcomes of this conference included a shift from a purely demographic focus for the UN's population programs to a woman centred approach, recognising the rights of all women to access quality reproductive and sexual health services. ARHA therefore aims to ensure that Australia meets its obligations agreed to Cairo, through public education and advocacy.

Australian Volunteers International

In the last 50 years AVI have placed more than 6000 Australian Volunteers in 70 countries in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. They provide much needed technical support through the assignment of volunteers in direct response to locally identified needs. They are committed to long term development outcomes through sustainable partnerships with host country employers. Most assignments are for 2 years, allowing time for volunteers to adjust, integrate and contribute to a host community. However, there are a limited number of positions for shorter periods of between one and two years.

Care Australia

CARE is one of Australia's largest foreign aid organisations, providing humanitarian assistance across the globe. It was formed in 1987 by former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser. GreenPeace Australia Pacific

Greenpeace Australia was founded in 1977 and joined forces with Greenpeace Pacific in 1998. Together we have more than 130,000 supporters who are the backbone of Greenpeace Australia Pacific. Greenpeace forms partnerships with other non-government organisations (NGOs). For example, in the Pacific, we join forces to help local communities (the customary owners of 97% of the coastal resources and forests that are under threat) achieve alternative, sustainable methods of development. The Asylum Seeker Project

The Asylum Seeker Project is run jointly by Hotham Mission, Outreach Mission and the Seddon Congregation of the Uniting Church, and has been established for the last 5 years, providing temporary accommodation, support and referral to asylum seekers who have no income or work rights and no financial assistance. We work closely with the Red Cross' Asylum Seeker Assistance Scheme, the Victorian Foundation for the Survivors of Torture and the National Council of Churches from where the majority of asylum seekers are referred, in ensuring the essential needs of the asylum seekers are met.

The Australia Institute

The Australia Institute is an independent public policy research centre. The Institute was launched in 1994 to develop and conduct research and policy analysis and to participate forcefully in public debates. In addition, the Institute undertakes research and analysis commissioned and paid for by government, business, unions and community organisations. Those involved in the Institute have each, from different viewpoints, been concerned about the impact on Australian society of the priority given to a narrow definition of economic efficiency over community, environmental and ethical considerations in public and private decision making. A better balance is urgently needed.
