- Huge quake hits Papua New Guinea
-
BBC, Monday, 9 September, 2002, 08:51 GMT 09:51 UK. A major earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale has hit the coastal waters north of Papua New Guinea. Initial unconfirmed reports said at least four people were killed and some coastal houses were destroyed. About 20,000 in the provincial capital Wewak have been left without water. A tremor of a similar size in 1998 caused a tsunami, or wave surge, which hit the shore killing over 2,000 people. But this quake sparked a smaller tidal wave, which washed 10-15 metres (30-50 feet) inland, and knocked some coastal houses off their stilts, according to officials in Wewak. At least two of those who died - a mother and her child - were reported by a Catholic church official to have drowned in the tsunami.

- Tonga failed to get tsunami alert
-
When a massive magnitude 7.8 earthquake rocked the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, a power failure prevented international tsunami warnings from reaching the tiny country. While little damage was caused to Tonga or other countries in the South Pacific beyond broken windows, the quake has raised troubling questions about the effectiveness of tsunami alerts, which have come under global scrutiny since the Indian Ocean disaster nearly 18 months ago that left an estimated 216,000 people dead or missing in a dozen countries. - West Papua/Indonesia Earthquake - Feb 2004: Quake-hit Indonesia town picks through the rubble
-
By Tomi Soetjipto NABIRE, Indonesia (Reuters) - Worshippers flocked to Sunday mass, shops opened for business and public transport plied the streets of Nabire in Indonesia's Papua province on Sunday as a semblance of normalcy returned after two earthquakes in as many days. Many of the coastal town's 26,000 residents spent the night in the open, fearing further quakes that could add to an official casualty toll that had already reached 27 dead and hundreds injured. The Papua military in the provincial capital of Jayapura put the deathtoll from the two major tremors at 31 and a spokesman said the number could increase.
