AusAID, 15.30 (AEDT) Wednesday 24 March 2004. The Ramu Valley, located in Papua New Guinea's Madang Province has been experiencing serious flooding since 22 March 2004, after 10 days of torrential rain. Australia stands ready to respond to requests for assistance from PNG, however at this stage the PNG Government has responded well to the disaster and is coping with the situation. Australian officials in PNG and Canberra are working closely with the PNG National Disaster Management Office to determine the extent of the damage and relief needs.

Source: IFRC Date: 20 Feb 2004 Unseasonable summer storms have caused widespread flooding in the Manawatu-Wanganui, Wellington region of the North Island of New Zealand. Some parts of upper South Island have also been affected. Civil Defence emergency declarations are in place for the region including Manawatu, Rangitikei, Tararua, Horowhenua, Ruapehu and Wanganui districts and South Taranaki. Flooding due to heavy rain and strong winds has caused several key roads to be partially closed including State Highways 4, 54 and 56. A number of local and provincial roads also remain closed.

- Samoa Floods - June 2003: American Samoa to receive funding after being declared a federal disaster area

RNZI NEWS, 8:15 am on 09 June 2003. The US President, George Bush, has declared American Samoa a federal disaster area following the flooding and landslides in the territory last month. Four people were killed, many people were left homeless and up to fifty million dollars worth of damage was caused by the torrential rain.

PORT VILA, Vanuatu, January 7, 2003 (ENS) - Way out in the far southwest Pacific Ocean, unusual weather conditions are devastating far flung island nations. The latest victim is Vanuatu which was hit from December 21 through 24 by heavy rain with hail. Large landslides and flash-flooding along many of the creeks and rivers resulted from the rain, according to reports from the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office issued through the office of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs Regional Disaster Response Adviser for the Pacific.

Ref: OCHA/GVA - 2003/0002 OCHA Situation Report No. 1 Vanuatu - Hail, Landslides and Flooding Occurred: 21-24 December 2002. This situation report is based on information provided by the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), through the office of the OCHA Regional Disaster Response Adviser for the Pacific. From 21 to 24 December 2002, heavy rain with hail - a very unusual phenomenon in these latitudes - fell on the southern Tanna Island; from Ipeukel on the Southeast Coast to Green Point in the South. Tanna is one of three main islands in Tafea, the southernmost province of Vanuatu.
