Economic Impact of Natural Disasters on Development in the Pacific

The experiences of the selected sectors in Fiji, Niue, Tuvalu and Vanuatu demonstrate that past natural hazards have resulted in significant short-term and long-term direct, indirect and intangible impacts. On the basis of the findings from the case studies, natural hazards have a considerable economic impact on development in the Pacific and often lead to deterioration in the quality of life of Pacific Island communities. The limited analysis that was undertaken suggests that greater emphasis on hazard and risk management can reduce the negative impacts of disasters, and thereby reduce the costs of disaster response and recovery. Indian Ocean Tsunami-Earthquake Disaster: A timely reminder for Pacific Island States

By Russell Howorth, Deputy Director South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission, (SOPAC), 28th December 2004. This disaster, coming as it does in the middle of the festive season, is a particularly awesome reminder from Nature of our vulnerability to natural events. It is the latest in a series of events during 2004, many of which have been climate and weather-related events. All serve as a reminder of the critical importance of building our resilience to cope with natural disasters.

The Australian-Pacific Centre for Emergency and Disaster Information (APCEDI)

The Australian-Pacific Centre for Emergency and Disaster Information (APCEDI) is managed by AFAP to help with rapid disaster response assessment. This is a communications network that is activated during a disaster to disseminate information. APCEDI is an early warning mechanism initially designed for the Australian Foundation for the Peoples of Asia and the Pacific (AFAP) and the Foundation of the Peoples of the South Pacific International (FSPI). This mechanism was originally designed to alert the many Foundation Headquarters, Field Offices and personnel across the islands of the South Pacific of impending threats from natural disasters, namely cyclones and volcanic eruption.
