Concerns Over Eminent Persons Group Composition: PCRC Media Release

November 3, 2003. The Pacific Concerns Resource Centre has described the composition of the Eminent Persons Group to review the Pacific Islands Forum as a false impression that only men of the older generation are capable of becoming members of the Eminent Persons Group. PCRC Director, Motarilavoa Hilda Lini says "While we respect the wisdom and calibre of Pacific elders, we also expect the truth and reality of 50% voices of women and 75% voices of youth to also feel that they take ownership in directing the Review Process of the PIF, if the organisation they have always believed they owned will have any relevance to the future of the Pacific community".

Pacific Islands Forum: What it is, and what it does

The New Zealand Herald, 12.08.2003 What is the Pacific Forum? A club of 16 countries from the Pacific who meet for several days a year to talk about the issues that affect them. Once these focused on trade, education and tourism, but they have been overtaken by issues such as security, governance, sustainable development, people smuggling and Aids. In the Pacific style, there are no rules and leaders talk frankly about regional concerns.

A Pacific engaged: Australia's relations with Papua New Guinea and the island states of the south-west Pacific

From the Australian Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, Tabled 12 August 2003. "Pacific island nations are experiencing a period of rapid social change characterised by uncertainty and instability as a result of environmental and development pressures. There are numerous issues for these countries to contend with during this time, such as: increasing social and economic inequality; corruption; high unemployment particularly for youth; ethnic tensions; environmental degradation; and declining health, education and living standards. With these considerations in mind, the Committee sought to assess how effectively Australia's assistance in the region was addressing these issues and in what ways Australia might in the future, assist these countries to achieve a level of sustainability."

Neo-Colonialism in the Pacific: The 34th Pacific Islands Forum

(Aotearoa New Zealand Independent Media) by Forum Analysis, Wed Aug 13 '03. "The Forum itself is to be conducted in a fashion that is an insult to democracy. Following the Leaders' meeting, there is an opportunity for "private, off-the record discussion" (according to MFAT). Considering the autocratic nature of some of the countries involved, a secret leaders' meeting with no public agenda and no access to the public media is an insult to democracy."

Real security is environmental security

The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting continues to be the region's most important political meeting. Each year, the leaders of 16 countries meet to discuss issues of regional concern, including environmental issues. Greenpeace has attended the Forum in various capacities for well over ten years. We believe it is an opportunity to ensure the voice of non-government organisations is also heard as issues of regional importance are discussed. We hope that this year, environment and sustainabilty issues are given a high priority as part of the Forum's work. Greenpeace believes real security is environmental security. This page includes links to issues of Greenpeace's 'Forum Nius' newsletters.

We look at the nations and some of the issues facing them."
