Turkey and Armenia: Opening Minds, Opening Borders

This Crisis Group Report looks at the Turkey-Armenia despute and argues that both countries "should seize [the] opportunity yet to normalise relations, work on a new approach to shared history and open a European border that for nearly a century has been hostage to conflict." - this comes as a decade of academic and civil society outreach has laid the foundations for what is now intense official engagement between the governments. Social Services Policies and Family Well-being in the Asian and Pacific Region [PDF 529KB]

Family structure, functions and values are experiencing unprecedented changes in Asia and the Pacific. However, there is often an absence of a family perspective in social policymaking in general and in social protection policymaking in particular. Against this background, ESCAP launched in 2007 a project entitled 'Enhancing policies on social services in support of family well-being in Asia and the Pacific'. It aimed to provide governments and other relevant stakeholders in the region with innovative approaches to strengthen family well-being through enhanced policies for the provision of social protection and the effective delivery of social services. Produced as a bi-product of the project, the publication contains a regional overview of changing features of family and existing social protection schemes and services to strengthening family.(UNESCAP, February 2009)

Enhancing the agricultural sector in Pacific island economies [pdf]

Agriculture continues to play an important role in the growth and development of most Pacific island countries. With increasing populations and desire for higher incomes, the island countries will have to increase agricultural production, especially the Micronesian and Melanesian countries. In most countries, increases in agricultural production can be gained by increases in land area under agriculture, or by increasing efficiency and productivity. In this paper, we examine how selected Pacific island countries have measured up with respect to raising efficiency. Results reveal that efficiency levels in the four countries have not changed over the past four decades.(Mahendra Reddy, Pacific Economic Bulletin, 2007)

Food Security and Climate Change in the South Pacific

Pacific Islanders traditional and robust local food production has significantly been eroded with urbanisation and cheap, poor quality food imports. Climate change will increase threats to food security, through its impacts on food production, health, infrastructure, the ability of countries to import food, and the ability of households to purchase food (Pacific Ecologist, 2007).

Timor Leste: Taking turns

UNDER the slogan "We liberated the country...now we liberate the people," Xanana Gusmao is campaigning tirelessly for Timor-Leste's first parliamentary election on June 30th. Mr Gusmao, leader of the resistance to Indonesian rule, was president from independence in 2002 until last month. That post is now filled by Jose Ramos-Horta, a Nobel peace-prize winner for his work in the exiled resistance. In the presidential election he easily defeated the candidate of the ruling party, Fretilin. Mr Gusmao now wants to succeed his old ally as prime minister (The Economist, 21 June 2007).
