- International Crisis Group's Early Warning Resources
-
Early warning is a critical part of conflict prevention and management, and a core element of Crisis Group's mission. Crisis Group analysts produce regular analytical reports containing practical recommendations targeted at key international decision-takers. Our goal is to warn governments, international organisations and the world community at large about impending deadly conflict and help them prevent or at least contain it - and, if and when prevention fails, try to resolve the conflict.

- Indigenous Democracy: Traditional Conflict Resolution Mechanisms (pdf)
-
ITDG-EA, January 2004. Edited by Betty Rabar, Martin Karimi. This publication details the indigenous methods of conflict resolution among the Pokot, Tukana, Samburu, and Marakwet communities of North Rift Kenya. Traditional conflict resolution structures are closely bound with socio- political and economic realities of the lifestyles of the African communities. These conflict resolution structures are rooted in the culture and history of African people, and are in one way or another unique to each community. The overriding legitimacy of indigenous conflict resolution structures amongst these communities is striking. The publication outlines scarce and unequal access to natural resources and power, ethnic mistrust (ethnocentrism), inadequate state structures, border tensions and proliferation of illicit arms into the hands of tribal chiefs, warlords and fellow tribesmen as some of the causes of inter-ethnic conflicts in northern Kenya.

- Conflict, Humanitarian Assistance and Peacebuilding: Meeting the Challenges (PDF)
-
The paper aims to contribute to the formation of an understanding of practicable policy and operational responses to dilemmas faced by humanitarian agencies in conflict areas. It summarises current debates on conflict, aid and peacebuilding and suggests that humanitarian agencies can go beyond avoiding negative impacts on conflict ('Do No Harm'), to contributing positively to conflict transformation and peacebuilding in a way that respects their core mandates and key humanitarian principles. The paper argues that this may be achieved by incorporating a 'conflict sensitive' approach in planning and programming and provides key recommendations for humanitarian agencies, donors and Western governments. - Resource Pack for Conflict Transformation
-
Available as 5 separate PDF files. The International Alert Resource Pack is designed for a wide range of users in many settings, including: people engaged in conflicts facilitators and trainers individuals, groups and local communities involved or interested in getting involved in conflict resolution as third parties. The Pack is not intended to be a 'how-to' training manual prescribing a 'right' way to resolve conflicts, nor as a continuous narrative to be read from cover to cover. Instead, as a Resource Pack, it may provide a start in the field of conflict resolution for some people, and add to the knowledge others have already gained. Trainers are encouraged to select from it parts which are useful additions to their existing resources and preferred methods The Pack retains some Western and Anglophile bias, which users are encouraged to be aware of, and acknowledge or balance, as appropriate to each setting.

- Resolving Conflict Creatively in the Multicultural Community
-
Video and detailed Teacher's Manual Participants from the four Commonwealth regions, themselves experienced in conflict resolution, get together with workshop leader Kathleen Cleland Moyer to upgrade their skills and knowledge of the mediation process. In the video, during Kathleen's short absence, the participants stage a mock mediation and feedback session to make the point that ignorance of other people's culture (or cultural misunderstanding) can become the underlying cause of conflict. When Kathleen returns she witnesses a "real" conflict (almost violent!?) between the participants and uses the opportunity to demonstrate some techniques on how to address inter-cultural conflict.

- Peace Agreements
-
Although they vary enormously in complexity, number of actors, timescale and outcome, peace processes have become the orthodox way in which low intensity, seemingly intractable, ethnic conflicts reached an accommodation in the 1990s. A clear trend towards internally agreed initiatives, rather than externally imposed settlements, is noticeable. Yet, the majority of peace accords fail. Often, peace accords fail to anticipate post-conflict problems, or are regarded as a staging post in the conflict. The accords are worth examining in detail though. This is particularly the case from a comparative perspective. It has become increasingly common for actors in one peace process to borrow from the experiences of others. To this end, the publication and widespread dissemination of recent peace accords has enormous merit.
