Listen to the nonviolent poor

Activists of the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), the Save the Narmada Movement against Big Dams, are protesting against the Madhya Pradesh government's forcible eviction of more than 1,000 Adivasi (indigenous) families to make way for the Maan Dam on the Narmada River. All they're asking is that the government of Madhya Pradesh implement its own policy of providing land to those being displaced by the Maan Dam.

Making a killing: the business of war

Author(s): International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. Produced by: The Center for Public Integrity (2002). Amid the military downsizing and increasing number of small conflicts that followed the end of the Cold War, governments turned increasingly to private military companies - a recently coined euphemism for mercenaries - to intervene on their behalf in war zones around the globe. Often, these companies work as proxies for national or corporate interests, whose involvement is buried under layers of secrecy. Entrepreneurs selling arms and companies drilling and mining in unstable regions have prolonged the conflicts. A nearly two-year investigation by the Center for Public Integrity's International Consortium of Investigative Journalists has also found that a handful of individuals and companies with connections to governments, multinational corporations and, sometimes, criminal syndicates in the United States, Europe, Africa and the Middle East have profited from this war commerce - a growth industry whose bottom line never takes into account the lives it destroys.

More than Implementers: Civil Society in Complex Emergencies, a discussion paper by Mick Quinn

The paper examines the peacebuilding potential of local partnerships with humanitarian focused INGOs. It explores the importance of partnership, the impact of conflict related crisis on civil society organisations and the pitfalls and advantages of partnership. The paper argues for a reanalysis of the relationship between external resource providers and civil society organisations and identifies seven sets of issues that humanitarians need to remain sensitive to in monitoring the progress of local partnerships.

Mortality before and after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: cluster sample survey (PDF 262.06 KB)

Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. By Les Roberts, Riyadh Lafta, Richard Garfield, Jamal Khudhairi, Gilbert Burnham, October 29, 2004. In March, 2003, military forces, mainly from the USA and the UK, invaded Iraq. We did a survey to compare mortality during the period of 14·6 months before the invasion with the 17·8 months after it. Making conservative assumptions, we think that about 100 000 excess deaths, or more have happened since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Violence accounted for most of the excess deaths and air strikes from coalition forces accounted for most violent deaths. We have shown that collection of public-health information is possible even during periods of extreme violence. Our results need further verification and should lead to changes to reduce noncombatant deaths from air strikes.

On neutral territory

In this article the journalist visits Chicao's a Columbian community whose people denounce violence and refuse to take part in the country's 40-year conflict, which pits government forces and rightwing paramilitaries against guerrilla groups. There are 40 'peace communities' across Columbia, recognised as autonomous, self-governing entities, but on occasion branded "guerrilla sympathisers". The Church and some NGOs believe that they provide a viable solution to the country's armed conflict. (Anastasia Moloney, Guardian Weekly, June 2006)

Oxford Research Group (ORG)

Oxford Research Group (ORG) is an independent non-governmental organisation established in 1982 which seeks to develop effective methods whereby people can bring about positive change on issues of national and international security by non-violent means. ORG combines rigorous research with an understanding of the people who make policy decisions. Countries of current focus are Iraq, Iran, Israel/Palestine, North Korea, and China (and policies of Britain and the USA towards them). Their work involves promoting accountability and transparency, providing information on current decisions so that public debate can take place, and fostering dialogue between policy-makers and their critics.

This report summarises the key findings from two collaborative projects on NGO capacity builing for conflict reduction and peacebuilding undertaken by International Alert (IA) and the Instituto de Ensenanza para el Desarrollo Sostenible (IEPADES) in Guetamala, and the Centre for Conflict Research (CCR)in Kenya, funded by DflD-CHAD and IA. The work particularly focussed on the development and validation of practical tools for conflict-sensitive development planning and monitoring. In both countries, the project included an assessment of the roles NGOs have played in promoting peace and justice in these countries, aa facilitated self-assessment of the current programming practices by a selected group of NGOs, and the development and testing of innovative conflict analysis and planning methodologies for NGOs. Beyond this, the NGO consultations in both countries provided a wealth of lessons on the challenges of civil society peacebuilding from an indigenous perspective. (pdf)

Peace in Northern Uganda? [pdf]

The peace talks in Juba between the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and the Ugandan government have made surprising progress, with a formal cessation of hostilities agreement signed on 26 August. Though there are reasons for optimism, the challenges are daunting. The discrepancies over expectations within the LRA itself, the questionable legitimacy of its delegation in Juba, differences in agenda and vision between the two parties, and limited capacity all suggest a new, two-phase mediation strategy may be required.
