The Right to Food, Report by the Special Rapporteur, Mission to the Occupied Palestinian Territories

In July 2003, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food traveled to the West Bank and Gaza Strip to investigate the growing crisis of food insecurity for Palestinian families living under Israeli occupation. The UN mission found that, "The Occupied Palestinian Territories is on the verge of humanitarian catastrophe as a result of extremely harsh security measures imposed by the occupying Israeli forces." Recommendations are made to the Government of Israel to improve access for humanitarian relief, to take immediate action to reverse the humanitarian crisis, to lift closures in the Territories and to end the confiscation and the disproportionate destruction of Palestinian lands, water and other resources.

Anti-Semitism at the World Social Forum?

by Cecilie Surasky Published on Thursday, February 19, 2004 by CommonDreams.org "It is my first morning at the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India and I am at a workshop on Palestinian women and the occupation [...] I have come because my New Voices human rights fellowship has decided to send the fellows to the WSF. But I have an additional reason for being here. The Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) has cited the WSF as one of the centers of what it and others refer to as the "new anti-Semitism", and these charges have been picked up by various journalists as evidence of a dangerous new trend on the left."

The Myth of the New Anti-Semitism

15th January by Brian Klug for 'The Nation' ...The claim that I am criticizing is not that there is a new outbreak of "old" anti-Semitism but that there is an outbreak of anti-Semitism of a new kind. Thus the case in support of this claim is not merely cumulative: It does not consist simply in piling up one example after another. There is an organizing principle, a central idea that holds the case together. It is only in terms of this idea that many of the examples cited in the literature count as evidence of antiSemitism. Without this central idea, the case that is made with their help falls apart. So the question is this: What puts the "new" into "new anti-Semitism"? The answer, in a word, is anti-Zionism. The "vilification of Israel," Iganski and Kosmin argue, is "the core characteristic" of Judeophobia (their term for "new anti-Semitism"). In his contribution to their book, Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of Britain and the Commonwealth, explains: "What we are witnessing today is the second great mutation of antisemitism in modern times, from racial antisemitism to religious anti-Zionism (with the added premise that all Jews are Zionists)." Sometimes the point is made by equating the State of Israel in the "new" anti-Semitism with the individual Jew in the "old" variety. Rabbi Sacks himself draws this parallel in an article in the Guardian: "At times [anti-Semitism] has been directed against Jews as individuals. Today it is directed against Jews as a sovereign people." In the same vein, Dershowitz argues that Israel has become "the Jew among Nations."

World Bank report on impact of Intifada, Vol. 1 of 1

"Twenty-Seven Months - Intifada, Closures and Palestinian Economic Crisis: An Assessment" (report no. 26314) was prepared in June 2003 as a follow-up to a report published in March 2002 ( " Fifteen Months - Intifada, Closures and Palestinian Economic Crisis " report no. 24931). The main objectives of this second Assessment is once again to help donors and the Palestinian Authority (PA) cope with the deep economic crisis in the West Bank and Gaza, as well as to encourage and inform discussion on Palestinian economic issues among the donors, the PA and the Government of Israel. Despite an inevitable preoccupation with short-term emergency issues, the report seeks to preserve a focus on the types of medium-term economic and institutional policies that will return to prominence once the current conflict ceases to dominate the daily lives of Palestinians and Israelis. While any short-term recovery will depend on the lifting of closures, this will not suffice to put the Palestinian economy onto a sustainable growth path.

Views of a Changing World 2003

The speed of the war in Iraq and the prevailing belief that the Iraqi people are better off as a result have modestly improved the image of America. But in most countries, opinions of the U.S. are markedly lower than they were a year ago. The war has widened the rift between Americans and Western Europeans, further inflamed the Muslim world, softened support for the war on terrorism, and significantly weakened global public support for the pillars of the post-World War II era - the U.N. and the North Atlantic alliance. These are the principal findings from the latest survey of the Pew Global Attitudes Project, conducted over the past month in 20 countries and the Palestinian Authority. It is being released together with a broader survey of 44 nations conducted in 2002, which covers attitudes on globalization, democratization and the role of Islam in governance and society.

We utilize nonviolent, direct-action methods of resistance to confront and challenge illegal Israeli occupation forces and policies. As enshrined in international law and UN resolutions, we recognize the Palestinian right to resist Israeli violence and occupation via legitimate armed struggle. Losing ground: Israel, poverty and the Palestinians

28 January 2003. Based on Christian Aid's work with local organisations in both Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories over the last five decades, this report looks at how and why ordinary Palestinians find themselves in conditions of deepening poverty. Today's acute impoverishment is in danger of destroying Palestinian society. Failure to address the root causes will be felt far beyond Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Forgotten Villages: Struggling to survive under closure in the West Bank

Oxfam Policy Paper 28. New research by Oxfam and its partners on the impact of the Israeli government's policy of closure finds thousands of rural households in the West Bank on the brink of destitution. Away from the media spotlight, the families of farmers, unemployed labourers and small businessmen in these often neglected Palestinian villages have run out of savings and sold off land and livestock. Urgent action is needed: Farmers are unable to harvest their olives, and water tankers can't pass checkpoints. Closure should be lifted now, in order to avert an immediate humanitarian disaster, and to protect prospects for future development and peace...All parties to the conflict must take immediate steps to prevent this humanitarian crisis from turning into a full-blown humanitarian disaster [1], by supporting the long-term livelihoods of the poorest and most vulnerable people in the area.(intro)
