Violence and discrimination against women in the armed conflict in Colombia

This report analyzes the discrimination and violence against women in the context of the Colombian armed conflict. This report is based on the results of the on-site visit to Colombia undertaken by the former Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women of the IACHR, Ms. Susana Villarán, between June 20-25, 2005. The primary objective of the visit was to assess the impact of the armed conflict on Colombian women and to receive information about the legislative, policy, institutional and judicial measures taken by the State to safeguard the rights of women within this sociopolitical context. What Happened to the Women? Gender and Reparations for Human Rights Violations

Women are victims of both authoritarianism and conflict, and often play a crucial role in the aftermath of violence, searching for victims or their remains, trying to reconstitute families and communities, and carrying on the tasks of memory and the demand for justice. Despite this, reparation programs are rarely designed to address the needs of women who bear the impact of human rights violations. But what happens to the lives of women dealing with human rights violations? What happens to their voices once they have their day in court or in front of a truth commission? This book argues for the introduction of a gender dimension into reparations programs. The volume explores gender and reparations policies in Guatemala, Peru, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Timor-Leste. All chapters are available for download online. Women for Peace

Throughout the world women are disproportionately represented among the civilian casualties of wars and among populations displaced by conflict. Women have always been at the forefront of the peace movement and the women's movement has a long history of working towards building new visions of peace and security, which place human concerns at their centre. This dossier includes links to articles, reports and websites on women and peace and is frequently updated. (Choike)

Women, Peace and Security

Conflict Trends Issue 3: 2003 - Full version available for download (PDF) Historically, gender-based exclusion, including women's absence from peace negotiating forums, has resulted in damaging setbacks in reconciliation and post-conflict recovery efforts... As steps are taken on the continent to address the difficulties that women face in conlfict situations, and to achieve the objective of increasing women's participation in peace processes, awareness needs to be raised on, firstly, why women are particularly at risk and the challenges they face on the continent, and secondly, what achievements have been made to mainstream gender at decision-making levels of sub-regional organisations. This special edition of Conflict Trends, on women, peace and security, seeks to illustrate and analyse these issues and stimulate debate on the continent regarding the positive contribution that women make on peace and security issues.

Women, Peace and Security: Study Submitted by the Secretary-General Pursuant to Resolution 1325 (200

United Nations Secretary-General, 2002. This publication is a study submitted by the Secretary-General pursuant to Security Council resolution 1325 (2000). It examines the impact of armed conflict on women and girls, the role of women in peacebuilding, and the gender dimensions of peace processes and conflict resolution. While the study shows that many positive steps have been taken to implement the resolution, women still form a minority of those who participate in peace and security negotiations, and receive less attention than men in post-conflict agreements, disarmament and reconstruction. The challenge remains the full implementation of the landmark document that resolution 1325 represents. This study points the way to a more systematic way forward.

Women, War and Peace Portal

(UNIFEM) This portal provides background information and timely updates on the impact of armed conflict on women and women's role in peace-building. It will systematically gather information and analysis both to inform decision-makers and to provoke greater response to women's experience of war and peace making. It is one of UNIFEM's contributions to the implementation of Security Council resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, passed unanimously in October of 2000. This groundbreaking resolution explicitly noted the "need to consolidate data on the impact of armed conflict on women and girls."
