PRAXIS: Resources For Social and Economic Development

Welcome to PRAXIS, the international development homepage of Prof. Richard J. Estes of the University of Pennsylvania. PRAXIS provides access to a vast array of archival resources on international and comparative social development. The intellectual commitment of PRAXIS is to the promotion of positive social change through informed action. Thus, PRAXIS has been designed to meet the informational needs of two audiences: 1. social work educators and students with international interests; and, 2. other educators and students who require assistance in locating useful national and international resources on social and economic development.

Wikipedia Encyclopedia

Wikipedia is a multilingual, open content, collaboratively developed encyclopedia (with supporting almanac-like and gazetteer-like information) that is managed and operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. As of September 2003, it covers a wide range of subjects and has 160,000 articles in English (by its own count). It also has over 150,000 articles in other languages. It covers many different topics.

University of Waikato Digital Library Project

This web site provides several document collections, including historical documents, humanitarian and development information, computer science technical reports and bibliographies, literary works, and magazines. All are available over the Web, and can be accessed through searching and browsing interfaces provided by the Greenstone digital library software. A huge collection providing gigabytes of information.

Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Fulltext Studies

The APEC database is an essential research resource for libraries maintaining a collection on current Asian affairs. The database consists of important studies APEC conducts on many facets of Asian economies - finance, trade, environment, human resources development, best practices in government, education and women's studies. It includes many industry specific APEC studies - Internet, technology, telecommunications, fisheries, and tourism to name a very few. All important content from the APEC studies is now available - including the fulltext, statistical tables, color graphs - even satellite photographs.

The Centre for Global Development - Working Papers

WordNet

An online lexical reference system whose design is inspired by current psycholinguistic theories of human lexical memory. English nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are organized into synonym sets, each representing one underlying lexical concept. Different relations link the synonym sets. WordNet was developed by the Cognitive Science Laboratory at Princeton University under the direction of Professor George A. Miller (Principal Investigator).

World Trade Organisation Bibliography Database

The present bibliography has been prepared by the Secretariat to provide a selected sample of studies on subjects related to the WTO. It includes articles, books and working papers published between 1995 and 2002. The bibliography principally contains economic references, but some legal references also appear. This searchable database contains over 1600 proven solutions from more than 140 countries to the common social, economic and environmental problems of an urbanizing world. It demonstrates the practical ways in which public, private and civil society sectors are working together to improve governance, eradicate poverty, provide access to shelter, land and basic services, protect the environment and support economic development. The database is a powerful tool for: Analyzing current trends and emerging issues; Networking with the people and organisations involved in implementation; Capacity-building including new knowledge management tools and methods; Technical Cooperation through the matching of supply with demand for proven expertise and experience; Policy development based on what works. UNESCO Knowledge Hub for Asia-Pacific

Launched by UNESCO's Regional Bureau for Communication and Information in New Delhi, this site provides information on activities of UNESCO and its partners in the region. The "Knowledge Hub" promotes capacity-building and free access to information, covering a wide range of activities in the region and highlighting some of its unique features. Presently only available in English, the number of languages used is planned to be rapidly increased so as to contribute to enhancing cultural and linguistic diversity and to extending access to knowledge resources expressed in other languages used in the region.
