Environment and Urbanization

This twice-yearly journal, published by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), focuses on urban and environmental issues and their interconnections, with a particular emphasis on Africa, Asia and Latin America (where most of world's urban population now lives). Each issue of the journal focuses on a particular theme and includes between 9 and 15 papers on that theme, papers responding to the themes of previous issues and a Book Notes section with details of new publications. Examples of journal themes include: globalization and cities; chronic poverty; ecological urbanization; meeting the Millennium Development Goals in urban areas; participatory governance; violence and security; water and sanitation; sustainable cities; and rural-urban linkages. Most issues of the journal include profiles of innovative organizations; some include papers on participatory tools and methods and a guide to the literature. A full text of all its issues (from its first issue in April 1989) is available on-line. All but the issues from the past two years are open-access.

Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Journal

Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, also known as the Movements project, is a transborder collective undertaking to confront Inter-Asia cultural politics. The question of culture is among the most important yet difficult facing Inter-Asia today. Prolonged histories of feudal ideology, patriarchy, heterosexism, and, within as well as between countries, racism and discrimination against subjugated peoples continue to block struggles for popular democracy. Long term complex-antagonisms generated by the uneven histories of global capitalism, colonialism and imperialism, the imposed nation-state structure and regressive forms of nationalist identity politics have rendered meaningful dialogues within the region very difficult. At the same time, the globalization and regionalization of technology, economy, and cultural production, and the recent breakdown of the Cold War structure, have opened up a unique moment for dialogues within Asia and internationally.

IDS Bulletin

A quarterly journal written for all those involved in development work - field workers, administrators, planners, students and teachers. Each issue features a topical development theme, which is explored from a variety of angles in articles commissioned by a specialist editor. The Bulletin is designed to bridge the gap between professional journals and the quality press. Currently all the work and research is generated by a different academic for each issue of the Bulletin from inside of IDS and they thus don't accept submissions from outside contributors. International Social Science Journal

The International Social Science Journal (ISSJ) , founded by UNESCO in 1949, is published quarterly in six language editions: English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian. Its purpose is to bridge diverse communities of social scientists, working in different problems and disciplines and in different parts of the world. It provides information and debate on subjects of interest to an international readership, written by an equally international range of authors. The ISSJ has a particular interest in policy-relevant questions and interdisciplinary approaches. It serves as a forum for review, reflection and discussion informed by the results of relevant research, rather than as an outlet of first publication of the results of research projects.
