SAMAR (South Asian Magazine for Action and Reflection)

SAMAR (South Asian Magazine for Action and Reflection) is a magazine/website with a South Asian focus based in the United States. We choose to use the term "South Asian" because we feel it is important to bring attention to the fact that South Asians are a group of people with a shared history and that this history provides a common basis for understanding our place in the contemporary world. Whereas most other South Asian magazines are based on differences of region, religion and nationality within South Asia, we have chosen to base ours on a South Asian collectivity that is now spread out across the globe. At SAMAR, we hope to reflect the full complexity of "South Asian" in the composition of the editorial collective, contributors and readers. SAMAR responds to a need for a publication that fosters serious debates within the South Asian community and is meant for a general audience. It focuses on analyses of social processes rather than on direct reporting of news events. As suggested by the name of the magazine, SAMAR tends towards social analyses that draw their energy from activist involvement. We are living in an era of rightward political drift. In North America as in South Asia, SAMAR's fundamental commitment is to advancing the forces for social and economic justice. To that end, we at SAMAR work to nurture critical and dissenting voices and invite you to join us in debating the range and depth of radical alternatives to present social arrangements.

Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Journal

Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, also known as the Movements project, is a transborder collective undertaking to confront Inter-Asia cultural politics. The question of culture is among the most important yet difficult facing Inter-Asia today. Prolonged histories of feudal ideology, patriarchy, heterosexism, and, within as well as between countries, racism and discrimination against subjugated peoples continue to block struggles for popular democracy. Long term complex-antagonisms generated by the uneven histories of global capitalism, colonialism and imperialism, the imposed nation-state structure and regressive forms of nationalist identity politics have rendered meaningful dialogues within the region very difficult. At the same time, the globalization and regionalization of technology, economy, and cultural production, and the recent breakdown of the Cold War structure, have opened up a unique moment for dialogues within Asia and internationally.

Countercurrents

An independent media website based in Kerala, India. "Countercurrents.org stands for all counter movements. Our sympathies are with all those who are engaged in struggles for economic, political, social, cultural, gender, environmental ..... justice. Our aim is to strengthen all these movements by spreading the information about their struggles, follow up and update the progress of the movements. Our conviction is that the driving force of social change is these small counter movements and struggles. In this era of media monopoly, internet offers to us an alternative channel of communication. We have to make use of this opportunity to the maximum for our global struggle. Through internet we can circulate news and events that the mainstream media ignores." - From the website.

The International Review for Environmental Strategies (IRES) is a peer-reviewed biannual journal aimed at disseminating strategically oriented environmental research to the world. Its scope is global, although it gives priority to issues of special concern to the Asia-Pacific region. In doing so, it seeks to promote and facilitate dialogue between stakeholders. The papers are evaluated, considering policy relevance, uniqueness, factual basis and methodology. The journal is published in English in order to reach a broad audience; however, papers are reviewed in terms of quality and utility, rather than for language proficiency.

Asia-Pacific Population Journal

This refereed professional journal contains articles, papers and notes that cover a broad range of population issues of interest to readers in the Asian and Pacific region in a form that is relatively easy for educated readers to understand. As much as possible, priority is given to the publication of articles and papers written by authors from the region or familiar with it in order to give them a forum to present their findings on population and development which other journals might not accept because of authors' weakness in English or the publication's limited interest in Asia and the Pacific. This strategy also stimulates professional scholarship and improved technical reporting in ESCAP developing countries.
