"'Washirika': Raising awareness without mass media" [PDF - 150Kb]

How do you raise awareness of current issues that could have a huge bearing on people's welfare without the use of media sources? This paper describes a project in Tanzania that employed 'field neighbours', people that visit neighbouring villages and engage people in conversations about current issues, as a way of making people more aware. How to build a good small NGO (PDF)

By Fadumo Alin (et.al.). Networklearning Organisation. 2003. This manual has been put together by a group of people who work in or with Non-Government Organisations, (NGOs). The experiences described are mainly with NGOs in Africa, the Indian sub-continent and countries previously in the USSR. The NGOs are in cities, smaller towns and the countryside. Some of them are concerned with human rights but more with improving the quality of life of various groups. The NGO field includes many dedicated and good-hearted people. But as NGOs attempt to grow, they face common problems. For example, often they fail to learn how to manage their money well. This leads to all kinds of problems e.g. they function less well, their reputations suffer and they cannot get funding to pursue their plans. So, with this manual, our goals are to help to build best practice into your NGO; to prevent, recognise and fix problems.

Spreading the Word Further: Guidelines for Disseminating Development Research (pdf)

By Julie Fisher, Frank Odhiambo and Andrew Cotton. Water, Engineering and Development Centre Loughborough University, 2003. Getting research findings out to those who stand to benefit from them is now widely recognised as a crucial aspect of any research project. This book is a product of the second phase of a DFID-funded KaR project that is aimed at increasing the impact of research through improved dissemination of the research process and findings. It develops the ideas from phase one of the project 'Spreading the Word: Practical guidelines for research dissemination strategies' (Saywell and Cotton, 1999). Based on in-depth consultation with Southern agencies about appropriate methods and formats by which to share information and knowledge relating to development research projects, this book provides dissemination checklists and guidelines. It also provides a useful overview of the issues and more specific advise for anyone engaged in development-related research, whether as contractors, practitioners or donors, at all stages of the project cycle.

Spreading the Word: Practical Guidelines for Research Dissemination Strategies (pdf)

By Darren Saywell and Andrew Cotton. Water, Engineering and Development Centre Loughborough University, 2003. This document reviews the interim findings from Phase 1 of a Department for International Development (DFID) funded project (R7127) concerning the development of practical guidelines for research dissemination strategies. Results from a review of literature, case study analysis and interviews with key informants are discussed. The purpose of Phase 1 is to understand current thinking and approaches to dissemination of research as adopted by sector based agencies both in the UK and internationally. This facilitates an initial analysis of common dissemination strategies used, problems and constraints experienced, and factors that aid effective dissemination. This in turn is used to provide tentative guidance for research contractors and DFID alike for dissemination of projects.

The Mission-Driven Business Planning Toolkit

"The Mission-Driven Business Planning Toolkit was developed in response to the growing tension faced by NGOs as they seek to balance sustainable business practice with their missions, and brings together the creative ideas, expertise and experiences of APC members and its private sector partners. It includes articles, issue-specific presentations and ready-to-use forms that address the various business planning processes for mission-driven organizations. These tools are aimed at helping individuals working in the non-profit ISP business (APC members' business), but may be more broadly applicable to other mission-driven sectors. Since it is all online, you can read the entire document or simply select those elements that are most central to the development of your organization right now." -From the Association of Progressive Communications Website

Monitoring and Evaluating Advocacy Programmes

(Aid Workers Network) By Louisa Gosling, 15 October 2003. Advocacy is an increasingly important strategy in development, but how do you prove its impact, and ensure appropriate lessons are learned? Advocacy is an essential component of rights-based programming, focusing on building constituencies around different issues, and working to change the broader context in which an agency works. As with any other development activity, good planning, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment are essential for good management of advocacy, for accountability, and to make sure lessons are learned to improve practice in the short and long term. It is essential to define what you are trying to achieve and how you will know whether or not you are succeeding. The findings from monitoring and evaluation can also be used for further advocacy purposes.

NGO Manager Organisational Assessment Tool

Over the past months, NGO Manager has developed an Organisational Assessment Tool, or OAT, which has the following characteristics: - Contains a comprehensive list of relevant management issues - Promotes process-orientation instead of static listing of positive and negative points. The OAT focuses on identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats with regard to each issue (SWOT analysis) - Helps to focus on causes of problems instead of highlighting symptoms only - Favours a participatory approach for the assessment, dialogue and transparency on its results. It can be used both by an individual and by groups. - Leads to qualitative statements instead of giving grades - Includes a detailed results section, which asks what the organisations achievements are - Provides users with quick overview of level of achievement for each management issue - Results in a clear list of priority subjects for improvement for each issue analysed - Facilitates the setting up of a plan of action - Contains easy-to-use worksheets, which can also be used to report on the results of the assessment.

Curriculum Kit on Population and Development

A major focus of ARHA's activities is educational work with young people. Over the past few years we have run a series of youth conferences titled "Planet Without a Plan". These are educational seminars which generally involve groups of students from several schools. Topics discussed include sustainable development, global population issues, the HIV/AIDS pandemic, reproductive rights, gender equity and the environment. This kit is intended to complement the youth conferences by providing ideas and resources for teachers and students to work on these issues within the classroom. The kit was originally produced for Victorian Schools in 2000. As the issues covered in the kit change so rapidly, the kit was updated in December 2001. Where possible, website and other contact details for relevant organizations have been provided so people using the kit can continue to update the information. The kit comes with handouts ready for use in the classroom, and can be downloaded.
