Innocenti Social Monitor 2004

UNICEF, 13 October 2004. The Innocenti Social Monitor highlights the gaps between rich and poor within the 27 countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States , as well as between the more prosperous countries of Central Europe and the poorer countries of the Caucasus and Central Asia. It examines how unemployment affects children: in some countries, including Bulgaria and Poland, large numbers of children are growing up in families where neither parent is employed.

International criminal accountability and children's rights

This brief examines how a child rights approach has been gradually inserted into the practice of international tribunals. Child victims should be entitled to no less justice than adults. However, to testify on war crimes and be questioned in courtrooms may add to-not relieve-children's trauma. Children can both suffer from and commit atrocity crimes. The book discusses the dilemma of child soldiers, who could be perpetrators of war crimes but are also victims of forceful recruitment, which is in itself a war crime. It demonstrates the growing child-protection culture at the UN and the cooperation among its agencies in combating the recruitment of child soldiers. (United Nations University, 2006)

Kid-Friendly Countries

A quality-of-life survey of children around the world. A good indicator of a country's quality-of-life is the way it treats its most vulnerable members. Kids are a good measure of how well government policies percolate to the most sensitive and defenseless segment of society. Children are more vulnerable than adults to hazards of any form due to their size, physiology and behavior. Children under age five breathe more air, drink more water and eat more food per unit of body weight than adults, so they experience a greater risk from pathogens and pollutants. The well-being of a child is also a good indicator of the well-being of the parents.

Kids With Cameras

Kids with Cameras is a non-profit organization that teaches the art of photography to marginalized children in communities around the world. We use photography to capture the imaginations of children, to empower them, building confidence, self-esteem and hope. We share their vision and voices with the world through exhibitions, books, websites and film. We are committed to furthering their general education beyond photography either by linking with local organizations to provide scholarships or by developing our own schools with a focus on leadership and the arts.

Mainstreaming child rights in the UN system: what will it take for NGO child rights coalitions? (pdf)

The survey was conducted to develop the NGO Group's understanding of what its traditional partners and stakeholders for children rights - NGOs and child rights coalitions - would need in order to mainstream children's rights into the UN treaty body system. The results indicated that mainstreaming in the manner described is not the accustomed practice of NGOs/coalitions and involvement in other treaty bodies will require a considerable outlay of resources both on their part and by the NGO Group. The survey also revealed that references to children in the human rights conventions guarantees some attention to children's issues in their considerations and concluding observations. Yet questions remain as to whether the level of debate and recommendations by these treaty bodies for these conventions are to the satisfaction of the child rights community. (D. Allen, NGO Group for the Convention on the Rights of the Child, 2005)

Human Rights Watch, August 22, 2005. Human Rights Watch has documented the plight of Uganda's lost generation of children in a new video, "Night Commuters: Uganda's Forgotten Children of War." A powerful photo essay by Bruno Stevens accompanies the video. The video, narrated by Dennis Haysbert, spotlights the phenomenon of tens of thousands of children in northern Uganda who walk miles every day to avoid abduction by rebel troops. The video shows the children embarking from their villages on long journeys in search of a safe place to sleep in urban areas.

Optimism and poverty in Africa: adaption or a means to survival?

Recent research finds that higher levels of optimism and happiness are associated with other positive traits and behaviors, such as productivity in the labor market, better health, and support for democracy and markets. We compare these findings to new survey data for Africa, in an attempt to understand these relationships in conditions of extreme adversity (Carol Graham and Matthew Hoover, November 2007)

Our Climate, Our Children, Our Responsibility [pdf]

Millions of the world's poorest children are among the principal victims of climate change caused by the rich developed world. This report draws attention to the impacts of climate change upon children. It strongly argues that both mitigation and adaptation are necessary as highlighted by the Stern Review, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the most recent Human Development Report. There is increasing global consensus on the way forward, including the need for international collective action (UNICEF, 2 April 2008).

Paying the Price. Why rich countries must invest now in a war on poverty (PDF 1,378 KB)

Oxfam International, 6 December 2004. A new report from international agency Oxfam today reveals that 45 million more children will die needlessly by 2015, because rich countries are failing to provide the necessary resources they promised to overcome poverty. The report, Paying the Price, finds that rich countries' aid budgets are half what they were in 1960 and poor countries are paying back a staggering $100 million a day in debt repayments. Oxfam also calculates that 97 million more children will be out of school by 2015 unless urgent action is taken.

Progress for Children: A Child Survival Report Card

It reveals global gains in child survival since 1990, but also significant discrepancies within and across countries and regions. Progress For Children will be a critical tool - a report card to measure progress in the lead up to 2015 - in the fight to save millions of children's lives and ensure their healthy future.

State of the World's Mothers 2005

Across the globe, 58 million girls are not attending school. Save the Children's State of the World's Mothers 2005 examines the ways investing in girls' education can benefit present and future generations of children, and society as a whole. It points to effective, affordable programs and policies that are working, even in the world's poorest countries. Other highlights of the report include: Looking back 10 years at gains in girls' education in 71 developing countries (Girls' Education Progress Report), the report finds that countries have a mixed record when it comes to progress in girls' education. Looking 10 years forward (Forecasts for Children), the report identifies 11 developing countries that are "most likely to succeed" in improving children's quality of life in the next decade in three important areas of global development: achieving smaller, healthier families; educating all children; and reaching the Millennium Development Goal targets. The sixth annual Mothers' Index ranks the best and worst countries to be a mother, based on a review of 10 indicators of women's and children's well-being among 110 countries, including the United States.

Teachers and Educational Quality: Monitoring Global Needs for 2015

This report provides global and regional assessments on the state of teachers and education quality. By highlighting trends in teacher quantity and quality, it explores the policy implications of bridging the gap between the two, especially in developing countries. It also compares the strengths and shortcomings of recruitment and deployment policies as well as working conditions around the world. Countries across the world will need to recruit more than 18 million teachers over the next decade. The greatest challenge lies in sub-Saharan Africa, which will need to expand its teaching force by 68% over this period. By 2015, countries like Chad will need almost four times as many primary teachers, from 16,000 to 61,000, while Ethiopia must double its stock to achieve universal primary education.
