- Job Offer Too Good to Be True?
-
The marriage or job offer abroad sounds too good to be true? It very well might be. Tens of thousands of people in Latin America fall victims to human trafficking every year. Latin America is a primary source of victims of human trafficking, as a region where poverty, a readiness to emigrate, and a widespread conviction that life must be better elsewhere come together to form a favourable breeding ground. Latin Americans also fall victim to the trafficking of organs. (Gloria Helena Rey, IPS, 23 August 2006)

- 2004 World Survey on the Role of Women in Development--Women and International Migration
-
The migration of women has always been an important component of international migration. As of 2000, 49 per cent of all international migrants were women or girls, and the proportion of females among international migrants had reached 51 per cent in more developed regions. A gender perspective is essential to understanding both the causes and consequences of international migration. This report sets out recommendations that, if adopted, will improve the situation of migrant, refugee and trafficked women (Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations, 2006).

- A Gap in their Hearts:
-
2003 UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN) (pdf) This is a report on the special problems that Somali unaccompanied children suffer; it is not an indictment on child migration or the difficult choices that Somali adults make. For the purpose of this book, IRIN has looked at the personal experiences and vulnerabilities of children who were smuggled into European and North American countries without parental or guardian support - in the hope that the plight of such children may in the future be better addressed both in the homeland and in the host countries.

- AFGHANISTAN: Lack of institutional mechanisms to tackle human trafficking
-
Afghanistan does not provide minimum standards for the elimination of human trafficking, say experts. The country is yet to draft its first anti-trafficking law. Lack of a specific law to deal with human trafficking and punish traffickers, coupled with weak judicial institutions, has raised questions about the country's anti-trafficking commitments (IRIN 19 June 2007).

- Asylums of exploitation: internally displaced children in the worst forms of child labour due to the armed conflict in Nepal [pdf]
-
The efforts by Terre des hommes, Save the Children Alliance and other organisations to combat child trafficking in Nepal have been complicated by the growing armed conflict, as tens of thousands of children and youth have been forced from their communities to urban areas. Hungry, often separated from friends and families, they can easily end up in the most exploitative forms of child labour. In addition, the efforts by police and government forces to stop child trafficking in Nepal have been compromised as more of their time is devoted to security-related issues.(Terre des hommes Foundation, 2006)

- Child Trafficking - The People Involved: A synthesis of findings from Albania, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine [PDF]
-
By June Kane for the International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC) of the International Labour Office (ILO), January 2005.The present report was originally intended as a synthesis of the results of the surveys in Albania, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. It became clear, however, that the results offered an opportunity to present and analyse child trafficking in these countries from a different angle. The report consequently focuses on the people involved in trafficking: the children, their parents and families, close acquaintances including friends and neighbours, traffickers, exploiters, and the many people who - no matter how small their contribution - aid and abet trafficking. These include the recruiters, transporters, logistical personnel, providers of forged or illicitly obtained documentation, information providers, accommodation providers, bodyguards and guides who all play a part in making trafficking happen. They also include the 'lazy' border guards, corrupt law enforcement personnel and 'unknowing' consular or visa office staff who do not ask the right questions or who do not respond appropriately when they know the answers given are untrue.

- Globalisation, trade and trafficking in women in Latin America
-
While trafficking of women in Latin America is by no means a new phenomenen, existing from the end of the 19th century, the aim of this paper is to address some questions on the relationship between trafficking in women and modern neoliberal globalisation. The paper does this by analysing the Latin American situation, with a focus on MERCOSUR, offering recommendations to legislators and civil society in the region. - Nigeria: Domestic workers or modern day slaves?
-
Human traffickers make good business taking poorly educated girls from Nigerian villages to toil as domestic workers in the sprawling urban throb of Lagos. But the girls, some as young as five years old, see little or none of their earnings. Across West Africa, millions of girls - and less often boys - are effectively sold into slavery as domestic workers. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse is widespread. Many are kept under lock and key, and have no contact with anyone outside their employers - no one to turn to for help. (IRIN News, September 12, 2006)

- Preventing Discrimination, Exploitation and Abuse of Women Migrant Workers: Trafficking of Women and Girls (PDF)
-
Author(s): Lean Lim, L. Produced by: International Labour Organization (ILO) (2003) This booklet is the sixth in a series on 'Preventing Discrimination, Exploitation and Abuse of Women Migrant Workers: An Information Guide', produced by the ILO. This section focuses on a global problem of growing concern: trafficking in persons, especially women and girls. The guide identifies the supply-side and demand-side causes, describes the mechanics of trafficking and explains why women and girls are more vulnerable to becoming victims. It points out that trafficking in human beings is, first and foremost, a violation of human rights; it should not be dealt with merely from the perspective of fighting illegal migration nor protecting national interests (PDF 495Kb).

- Trafficking in East Timor: A Look into the Newest Nation's Sex Industry [PDF]
-
Between March and June 2004, the Alola Foundation conducted an Anti-trafficking for Sexual Exploitation Needs Assessment in East Timor. The objective of this qualitative study was threefold: 1. to analyze the situation and assess the needs of trafficking victims for sexual exploitation, 2. to uncover the scope of trafficking operations by understanding how the sex industry operates, and 3. to evaluate the political, legal, cultural, and social context of prostitution and the efforts to combat human trafficking. As a result, the Alola Foundation can make knowledgeable recommendations to the government and other interested parties on how to provide needed services to trafficking victims and what measures should be taken to combat the international crime. This was not intended to be a quantitative study rather a general, qualitative, snapshot of the current situation. Scroll down the page to access the English and Indonesian versions.
