Angry Young Men, Veiled Young Women

Corner House Briefing 34, by Anne Hendrixson. December 2004. This briefing sets out a short history and critique of youth bulge theory in the context of the attack on New York's World Trade Center on 11 September 2001 and the subsequent growth of US militarism at home and abroad. It aims not only to call attention to how the theory reflects, and is reflected in, racial, gender and age discrimination, but also to suggest how it is being contested.

Facing History

Facing History and Ourselves is based on the belief that education in a democracy must be what Alexis de Tocqueville called "an apprenticeship in liberty." Facing History helps students find meaning in the past and recognize the need for participation and responsible decision making. For more than 25 years, Facing History has engaged teachers and students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice, and antisemitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry. By studying the historical development of the Holocaust and other examples of collective violence, students make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives.

Global Employment Trends for Youth 2004 (pdf)

International Labour Office, Geneva, 2004. Youth unemployment has skyrocketed worldwide over the past decade to some 88 million, according to a study by the International Labour Office (ILO), reaching an all time high with young people aged 15 to 24 now representing nearly half the world's jobless. "Global Employment Trends for Youth 2004", prepared by the ILO's Employment Strategy Department, found that while youth represent 25 per cent of the working age population between the ages of 15 and 64, they made up as much as 47 per cent of the total 186 million people out of work worldwide in 2003. But the problem goes far beyond the large number of young unemployed people: the report says that young people represent some 130 million of the world's 550 million working poor who work but are unable to lift themselves and their families above the equivalent of US$ 1 per day poverty line. These young people struggle to survive, often performing work under unsatisfactory conditions in the informal economy.

In desperation, Palestinians seek prison in Israel

A growing number of desperate young Palestinian men are deliberately getting themselves arrested at Israeli checkpoints so that they will be sent to Israeli-run prisons, Israeli and Palestinian officials say. The youths, mostly teenage boys, are taking the dangerous measure in part because they say it is easier to study for exams in an Israeli prison than it is at home in the West Bank. Some also want to escape family hardship and deepening poverty. Since January, when the phenomenon was first identified, Israeli army officials say at least 80 young men have either turned up at checkpoints and asked to be arrested or else carried knives and other weapons to ensure they are detained.(Luke Baker, Reuters Alertnet, 11 May 2006)

Making Commitments Matter: A toolkit for young people to evaluate national youth policy

This Toolkit is meant for national youth organizations and/or representatives working with youth. It can be used as a tool to: Assess your country's progress in reaching the WPAY goals; Prioritize your organization's work, based on your findings; Initiate actions at the national level. This Toolkit should be used as a starting point for determining what has done to better the lives of young people since 1995 in your community. In addition to providing methods for evaluating this progress, the Toolkit also contains concrete tools to further your youth work. As such, we hope that you will find it both an informative and useful resource for your organization.

Nigeria: Domestic workers or modern day slaves?

Human traffickers make good business taking poorly educated girls from Nigerian villages to toil as domestic workers in the sprawling urban throb of Lagos. But the girls, some as young as five years old, see little or none of their earnings. Across West Africa, millions of girls - and less often boys - are effectively sold into slavery as domestic workers. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse is widespread. Many are kept under lock and key, and have no contact with anyone outside their employers - no one to turn to for help. (IRIN News, September 12, 2006)

Nuclear Age Peace Foundation Youth Outreach Initiative

Often viewed as a highly intellectual and scientific issue, nuclear weapons can be a particularly daunting topic of conversation for anyone. The same can be said for any issue related to war and peace. In particular, young people represent an often neglected and marginalized constituency who tend to be discouraged from learning about and debating these admittedly difficult, yet critical themes. We at the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation reject this trend. We acknowledge that youth culture and resistance have been powerful forces for social change for centuries. We respect the energy and creativity of today's youth. The resources listed are intended to help young people, educators and parents alike in exploring the common ground between youth organizing and nuclear weapons issues.

Our Voice, Our Future: Young People Report on Progress Made on the UNGASS Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS [PDF]

UNFPA, 2005. The Declaration of Commitment (DoC) on HIV/AIDS, adopted by the Member States at the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on HIV/AIDS in June 2001, reflects global recognition of the pandemic as the single greatest threat to the well-being of future generations. It establishes, for the first time ever, time-bound targets to which governments and the United Nations may be held accountable. Most importantly, the Declaration recognizes young people's particular to HIV infection and gives direction to governments on how to effectively address the HIV/AIDS pandemic among them. In publishing this report, UNFPA gives voice to young people from 12 countries around the world. Four years into the implementation of the DoC, young people are reporting on their government's achievements in addressing the AIDS pandemic among them. Based on their own experiences, they have also highlighted shortfalls and challenges in the process, and have made specific recommendations to ensure that the targets set out in the DoC on HIV/AIDS are achieved.
