- Report submitted by the Special Rapporteur on the right to education
-
A report or the right of girls to education, originally intended for the Commission on Human Rights will now be presented to the new Human Rights Council by Vernor Muñoz, UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Education The Special Rapporteur addresses the socio-cultural context of gender discrimination by defining the concept of patriarchalism, which underpins discriminatory behaviours. He denounces the negative impact on education, and especially on girls' education, of the persistent consideration of education as being a service rather than a human right and insists on the importance of ensuring not only girls' access to school but also their completion of the education cycle. The report identifies obstacles to education for girls, such as early marriages and pregnancies, child labour (especially domestic work) and armed conflicts. His report covers social and cultural context of gender discrimination including standardised education and patriarchal attitudes and inequalities; girls' education and the economy; the long road to gender equality; universal primary education and its impact on gender balance; from equal access to total equality; on working girls; on marriage, pregnancy and motherhood as well as girls from communities that experience discrimination; communication with governments; education policy and classroom reality from individual challenges to collective responsibilities; and sex education He devotes a chapter to girls in armed conflicts and makes 25 recommendations. (Vernor Muñoz Villalobos, United Nations, written 14 December 2004, presented 31 March 2006)

- The End of Child Labour: Within Reach (pdf)
-
The International Labour Organization's 100-page new report is cautiously optimistic. Child labour, especially in its worst forms, is in decline for the first time across the globe, and could feasibly be eliminated, in most of its worst forms, in 10 years. The report attributes the reduction in child labour to increased political will and awareness and concrete action, particularly in the field of poverty reduction and mass education that has led to a worldwide movement against child labour. Challenges that remain in the fight against child labour are reaching agricultural workers, addressing the impact of HIV/AIDS on child labour, and building stronger links between child labour and youth employment concerns. It is important to keep up the current pace of the decline through concerted action. (ILO, May 2006)

- The Information Revolution and Globalization: Seizing New Opportunities for Youth Employment (PDF)
-
Author(s): Chowdhury, N. Produced by: Youth Employment Summit (2002) This paper is about how to harness IT to foster youth employment or livelihood opportunities in developing countries. The central question asked by the author in this paper is 'what kind of policies will further the IT revolution in the interest of creating livelihoods for the young people of the developing world?' The author provides a detailed analysis of the globalisation of the IT revolution and argues that the single greatest policy priority of developing countries eager to participate in the IT Revolution, to the benefit of young people, must be to enhance the quality of their workforce and their physical and data infrastructure. - The Youth Employment Network
-
The Youth Employment Network (YEN) was created within the framework of the Millennium Declaration where Heads of State and Government resolved to "develop and implement strategies that give young people everywhere a real chance to find decent and productive work." Youth employment is both an integral part of the Millennium Declaration and a key contribution to meeting other Millennium Goals, including those relating to poverty reduction. Youth employment is key to the broader agenda on employment and the fight against poverty. This is a partnership between the UN, the World Bank and the ILO, the latter hosting the Secretariat, to bring together leaders in industry, youth and civil society representatives, and policymakers to explore imaginative approaches to the challenges of youth unemployment.

- United Nations World Youth Report 2005
-
The year 2005 will be ten years since the General Assembly adopted the World Programme of Action for Youth in 1995. With over 200 million youth living in poverty, 130 million youth illiterate, 88 million unemployed and 10 million young people living with HIV/AIDS, the case for a renewed commitment to the goals of the World Programme of Action is clear. In the World Youth Report 2005, an official report to the General Assembly, it is argued that too often, youth policy is driven by negative stereotypes of young people, including delinquency, drug abuse and violence. What seems to be forgotten that young people are a positive force for development.

- World Development Report 2007: Development and the Next Generation
-
Developing countries which invest in better education, healthcare, and job training for their record numbers of young people between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age, could produce surging economic growth and sharply reduced poverty. With 1.3 billion young people now living in the developing world-the largest-ever youth group in history-the report says there has never been a better time to invest in youth because they are healthier and better educated than previous generations, and they will join the workforce with fewer dependents because of changing demographics.
