CARE's 10 Ideas To Rid The World Of Poverty And 10 Ways Individuals Can Help

CARE, one of the world's leading humanitarian organizations, has developed a list of 10 ideas to rid the world of poverty and 10 ways individuals can help - because the issues may be global, but the solutions lie in each of us. Though everyone might not agree on every idea, we can agree that a better and more humane world is possible. The worst failure we could suffer is the failure to have tried to realize it.

Lift the Lid on Unjust Debt!

The very poorest countries in the world are still paying over 4 million dollars EVERY HOUR to the rich world repaying debts which in many cases arose from irresponsible or self-interested lending. It's time to lift the lid on illegitimate debts. (Jubilee Debt Campaign).

Stop the debt vultures!

n 1999, a 'vulture fund' called Donegal International bought a debt owed by Zambia, originally worth $15 million and then valued at about $30 million, for a knock-down price of $3.3 million. Now it has sued Zambia for the full amount, plus interest and costs - a staggering total of over $55 million! On 15th February 2007, a judge in London rejected the size of Donegal's claim, after Zambia fought back in the courts. But he nevertheless ruled that under law Donegal is entitled to something from Zambia. The exact total is to be determined, but may be around $20 million. This would be half of the amount that Zambia is due to save from debt relief this year: but it desperately needs all its money to invest in teachers, doctors and infrastructure. Donegal must not take this money, and you can help. Jubilee Debt Campaign, together with Oxfam, is calling on Donegal International not to claim this money. Please add your voice to our call. Your emails really do make a difference.

Stop the Export of U.S.-Funded Abstinence-Only HIV/AIDS Programs

'Abstinence-only' programs teach that abstaining from sex until marriage is the only effective way to prevent contracting HIV through sex. They deny young people critical information about condoms and other safer sex strategies, and promote marriage as a safeguard against HIV infection. These programs do not work, they violate kids' right to complete information about HIV/AIDS and leave young people at risk of contracting HIV in marriage, particularly women and girls. But the U.S. government is exporting them all over the world as part of President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. Support Ugandan AIDS activists by adding your name to a sign-on letter to their Ministry of Health. Write to President Bush and Ambassador Randall Tobias
